I have a synth playing 1 note (say, C), then 4 bars later another note comes in on top of it (say, G), while C is still playing. I am getting an unconsistent volume peak when the second note comes in (as in the volume doesn't peak to the same value each time and the amount of peak is different depending on what the second note is). I have lowered the velocity of the note and went through various compression settings (adjusting attack, release and threshold).
Is there a good way to get rid of this peak (not mastering)? It would be nice if someone could provide a specific example like if they've had to do this before. If you don't have a specific example, is there a general way to reduce this peak (general compression settings, etc). Thanks!

Try a very low ratio (like 1.5:1), set the threshold quite low so you get a lot of gain reduction and see if that evens things out, with transparent results.

in which frequencies do you have that peak? do you use another synth for the second hit or is it just like playing two voices on the same one? i thought lowering the velocity as long its routed to the volume should to the trick, maybe is routed somewhere else? if you use two different synths maybe with equing the specific parts of the peak in one of each would reduce that too (?)

pipe: I'll check those out, thanks. I'm still new at compression so I have just been doing lots of guessing and checking.
gutter: It is the same synth (I thought the velocity reduction would do that trick too). If I remember correctly, the peaks are around the 1kHz area.
Also, the compressor I am using is a BUS channel which has my other leads routed to it. Would it be a good idea to compress this channel that is having the peaks separately or is it just a see what it sounds like matter?

Insert a compressor on the specific channel as well, and try the settings I pointed out earlier.
If you have identified the area that causes the problems (i.e. around 1khz as you said), then EQ (notch) some of it out with a Q setting that works. Other than that, if you wanna get even more surgical about it, insert a multiband compressor and set one band to specifically work harder on that frequency range. I recently started using Logic's multiband compressor for lead parts where the filter is sweeping with a high resonance setting, does the trick for me.

I've never been able to get very good results with this sort of thing using Live's compressor..not sure what you're using but try another if that's what you're doing.
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

Sometimes especially in bass frequencies, tones appear to get louder as you play higher in the scale. One way to get around this is to reduce the velocity of the higher notes slightly. (Also fun if you are patching velocity to other parameters such as Semitone, LFO Rate of an LFO->Pitch modulation, or Portamento, for example.)

Did you play with keyboard tracking?

Keyboard tracking relates to how the filter cut off follows the keys. You may be able to adjust it so it doesn't open the filer up as much. |

You guys didn't read any of the responses did you Kane/Axis .
I'm using Cakewalk Vintage compressor.
I also reduced the velocity of the second note and it didn't help :-/

Haha, you got me, I didn't make it that far down... I'm busted
