Is there a way to CAP Cubase SX2 whether internally or via VSTs to NOT exceed a certain decibal threshold? It would be great if I could cap is so that even despite my habits of constantly turning the volume faders higher and higher, eventually it would max out. I would keep the level under hearing damage levels and I would feel much safer producing.

Glue your amplifier's volume knob at halfway.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Glad you like it. Please tell everyone by posting here:

Seriously. Fix your output level control at an appropriate level. For best quality, your master fader wants to be peaking as close to 0dB as you can so you'll need to control the level after it leaves Cubase. I'm guessing now that you have active speakers connected directly to the soundcard outputs, meaning that you have only software control over the output level...?           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

my setup is Audiocard -> dj mixer -> Active Monitors. I guess i could cap my dj mixer. the fact is, i never do even when I know its too loud. Id like the software to say 'too bad dude, its not getting any louder, i dont care waht u do". hehe.

Sounds like you need a limiter between the mixer and the speakers then.

Much the better solution is to learn to take care of your own volume levels though.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

As Colin said of course the most important thing is to restrict yourself to working on one volume level and stop the urge to turn it up.

Fact is if you are that worried about hearing damage then you SHOULD reduce the volume on your mixer when you (as you said) "know it's too loud"

Otherwise just plonk a Limiter on the output of either your soundcard mixer or your even your cubase mixer, and reduce the audio output volume on that... It'll mess with your mixes but at least your not damaging your ears....

However, whatever you do/apply you can always override it and hear it louder anyway... unless you want to take care of yerself in the first place

Yeh there is no need to be working at high levels apart from the odd occasion such as sorting the kick/bass out, and mixing down.

Im working mostly on headphones and its very difficult to keep an eye of the levels because its so immersive and theres no sense of the loudness through vibrations etc.

My advice is take regular breaks... every 1/2 hour rest for 5 minutes. Its also good for thinking about what your doing too!
