Complicated question..

You mean is it the same for sound quality, or raw output?

Sound quality-wise, no contest. 2 speakers are far superior to more (surround exempt) as phase and timing issues come into play when more that 2 sound sources are used.
Quality applies to cones in individual speakers too as the more crossovers employed to split the sound to different sized drivers the more chance of a 'lumpy' response curve. I tend to avoid 3-way speakers.

Wattage should not be the only consideration when dealing with speaker output.
'Efficiency' is a very important measurement when dealing with loudspeakers. You'll usually see ratings on speakers such as "95db 1w/1m". Thusly you can get extremely loud 50w speakers and comparably quiet 500w speakers. Or even completely different speakers rated at 50w that give different output levels for the same input power.

The higher the sensitivity, the more output in db per watt you get. Higher sensitivity in general usually means a higher quality speaker, as you get a good output volume without much input.

Remember, it takes about twice as much wattage to generate 3db more power (every 3db increase is perceived by the ear as twice the previous volume)

Efficiency decreases as the input reaches maximum capacity for the driver (known as power compression) this is because excess heat causes resistance, and the mechanical limits of speakers create more stress.

At a guess.. I'm gonna stick my neck out and say that a bunch of 1000 x 10watt speakers would create more output than 2 x 5000w speakers. A 10watt speaker isn't going to give a good bass response, but 1000 of them would give a pretty big hum!

Although.. depends what you're playing through them (sine wave or real music)
As bass is the movement of large amounts of air, it usually wins in db competitions but requires far more wattage to achieve.
