Not all of us have acoustically treated rooms, or the perfect studio at home- but we still want to produce nice music..

I use two systems to produce and mix my music.
Basic studio monitors and also PHONIC SEM Series Speakers.

The phonic's can be used to DJ at small venues… The upside I have found with using the phonics to produce (at low volumes of course) is that you can hear & feel the frequencies. This brings a huge advantage when it comes to EQ.

With my studio monitors I sometimes search for the frequency I don’t like, forrrrrrrrr hourssssss. Well not hours but longer than it should take. The sound plays with my ears and I don’t find it at all. You hear something is wrong, but with a boost, scrolling through the range everything sounds good. Frustrating

However with the phonics, you make a cut with the EQ and while scrolling, you can literally pinpoint the frequency you don’t like, I mean pin point, because you can feel it. After EQ is done and you switch back to the monitors – I am truly amazed with the results.

Taking out the frequency that doesn’t feel good makes more sense than taking out what doesn’t sound good. ;-) (what it sounds like is usually the mind fcuk to me)

To make small studio monitors work correctly you need to have a treated room- Which I know ain’t cheap, but if you have a big speaker in your face, (one speaker in mono) the reverberations becomes less of a nuisance and the feel of the track is more clear.

So if you have reached a point where you just want to give up, fed up with going nowhere slowly, invest in some 60X40cm or more speakers and hear… . . . I mean feel the difference.

Cheers guys and good luck

I usually switch between the two now and then. Working in mono can start to irritate me. Also you need to hear how the track opens up in stereo.

Many times before ive worked too long in mono, then when I switch to stereo you hear this crazy phasing going on. Mostly just a lead jumping way below 0 on the correlation meter, easy to fix yes, but I give myself a little slap for not fixing it from the start.

Using good quality samples is also very important. Free sample packs can sometimes waste your time especially if you don't know what you are doing. Next thing you know you’ll be adding compression, eq, phasers, etc- to enhance the quality and it won’t get you nowheres.

Badly recorded/processed is what it is.

I recommend checking out : http://www.loopmasters.com/

The Xfer and Designer Dance FX sample packs are great. It does lean more into House/Minimal but can also be used to compose other genres if you combine it with say Sylenth1 or Predator.

There’s some Psy trance packs you can check out too. Download a few taster packs to check out what you like. I usually leave out the synth loops, because putting together a bunch of loops that someone else created ain’t producing IMO.

The quality of these sample packs are superb, and I feel at ease to recommend it to anyone.

Cheers and enjoy yourself
