tried searching.. but nothing specifically about speaker stands.

I am using pretty regular speaker stands at the moment that look like these www.thomann.de/nl/quick_lok_bs300_monitor_stand.htm

now i am wondering if it is worth building my own stands. What i have in mind is a wooden frame (mdf) about 10 x 10 cm with sand inside to make them heavy. On top of that i could use some foam pads underneath the monitors to stop the resonance. Or would that be useless when you are already making such heavy stands? Any info would be appreciated. At the moment i have the feeling the stands arent doing a very good job at helping the monitors to give me the best sound possible.

i got those stands as well..pretty cheap and thats what they feel like as well..i got some primeacoustic monitor pads underneath..soundwise im satisfied..

but it depends on the size of your monitors, like if you got big monitors like k&H O300 for example you will need a more solid stand ..its because on higher volumes this simple ones start resonating as well..

i got adam A7 and its enough for them...

hope that helps..

After putting your tweeters at ear level and (obviously) supporting the weight of the speaker, it's all about stability. The purpose of mass-loading stands is not to eliminate resonance, it's just a way of lowering compliance. Ideally, when the woofer moves back and forth it should only move air and not cause the stand to move back and forth with it. With stands like the ones in the link you posted, this can definitely be a problem since the stability of the entire stand (and clarity of the bass) essentially relies on one bolt at the bottom of it.

I suggest using thin sheets of craft foam on the top of the stands instead of the more dense polystyrene type foam (if that's what you had in mind). It will hold the speaker to the stand better than dense foam will and should isolate just as well, if not better. Stuff like this:

I would also brace the stand internally if it's just going to be one big box. Like this:

Obviously not so elaborate, but you get the idea..

Make sure you get some feet for it too..rubber feet for hardwood floors or spikes for carpet.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

I made my own out by stacking concrete blocks. Ended up costing about $10 total for enough blocks (4 each) to make stands.

i've got some basic stands from Quick Lok but really like them. sound became a bit clearer (i got rid of unpleasant desk vibration at middle and high volumes), they help configure monitors placement better: the height, width and distance from your head. and there is more free space on the desk.
