Being that SPDIF is digital, any cable that fits will work. (Providing its not optical)
I pulled a phono lead in half and have one from my Virus to my DAC1.
It works.. |

what Tomos said
and really, spdif cable is a phono tip cable. s-video is different.

S/PDIF for syncing? wouldn't a MIDI cable (MTC) be more appropriate?
i guess a regular cinch cable may have the disadvance that it's not shielded as good as a regular yellow coax S/PDIF cable.
if it's only a short distance (and no interfering devices around it) - it should work. http://www.myspace.com/realtimeproject |

Yes audio will be transmitted, but you cannot clock with any analog cable. For that indeed a spdif is needed. If you really cannot find a spdif cable in Costa Rica, I would buy one over any website like
www.audiomidi.com
or
www.zzsounds.com
and have it shipped. Yes, it will be more expensive but you will have the cable you need. If you have midi cables you can sync with that as well btw.

There is no audio over SPDIF, only digital information. So what's to stop you using it to clock? Or am I missing something?
Perhaps not relevant, but amusing - According to the delightfully helpful Benchmark DAC manual, all tests concluded that the cable made absolutely zero difference to sound quality. They recommend you buy the cheapest cable you can. Upto 15 feet (!) in length will make no different to the jitter or quality of the decoded audio.
I feel sorry for people that pay a fortune for high-end digital cables |

| lol there is no such thing as an "analog cable" or "digital cable"
if the ends of the cable fit the connectors, it will work. This is not true in general but it IS true with spdif |

S/PDIF cables are specified at 75 ohm impedance.
for sure it will matter which data-rate you shove over the cable and
it matters if the input device got jitter correction or not (like the Benchmark DAC has).
the reason why these cables were specified co-axial is the shielding.
wouldn't recommend high-end cables, since the difference in sound won't justify the difference in price.
but: coax is recommend. http://www.myspace.com/realtimeproject |

True, there is no analog or digital cable, but there are cables transmitting digital information and there are cables transmitting analog information, I was relating to that in my previous post.
Spdif transmits digital audio signals. With a spdif cable you have 2 channels of audio.
You also have work clock transmitted with Spdif, so you can use it to sync and to transmit digital audio!
You'd be surprised at the many times I found myself saved from desaster with a spdif cable handy!

No cables that i know of are capable of transmitting information , as far as i know they work as a conductor for signal information between a transmitter and a receiver

I can see that you can have 4 channels if bit.nr 3 is set to true. On the other hand you can do 7.1 sound over SPDIF as well anyone with some more info on that?

I believe the video cables in cheap RCA sets (yellow, red, white) are generally closer to 75 ohm than the audio ones, which are more like 50. If you have to use a cheap one, go with a video cable, but I really recommend just getting an s/pdif cable.

Try the video cable first..I'm not sure how much truth there is to my last statement, but if you have one laying around it can't hurt anything. Go for the shortest cable possible, and no more than 3 meters.
I think you should still invest in a decent spdif cable..good to have around, even if this is only a temporary thing.
