I'm absolutely 100% sure you don't need an external plug-in in order to load soundfonts. I would have guided you step-by-step, but for some reason my SB live synth doesn't show up in Cubase and it will take me a while to fix the problem.
However, i can assist you a bit. As far as i remember, you need to press the white button with the arrow which is located under the channel output selection area. After you press it, select a midi channel with either A: SB live! midi synth or B: SB live! midi synth. Than, right click on the bank selection or the bank selection area or something like this (which or located in the part that was revealed after you pressed the white button) and choose load soundfonts. This is all i remember.
Wish i could be more helpful Tom |

Blah blah.. well, this will only help you if you want to hear your output and don't want to record, if you want to record anything you do digitally (mixdown) you need a VST sample player that is capable of SF2.. a few of these are EXSP-24 (or better EXS-24 if you use Logic), Bismark BS-1, Speedsoft Vsampler.. Otherwise you are playing samples off the hardware of the SoundBlaster and you can't mix that down in cubase/logic.. unless you are recording this externally with a hardware CD-R, Minidisc, or DAT (and I would then ask you why are you using an SoundBlaster if you have one of these) |

if you want to mix/add effects [except what your card can give ] - u need to play soundfotns as audio inside the PC, therefore u need VST instruments. try these: Audiosynth - it's light as a feather, and plays the SF2 very well.....[and it's freeware!], or try Halion - a VST sampler.
but if you're ok with the bare sounfdfonts - just use your internal card's synth to play the sounds and use the sf u need.
