what i would like to know is . . . .
what are the advantages of having a better sound card than the one that comes standard with your computer? What kind of things can you do that you can't with a standard one
Is an audio interface a soundcard (whenever i search for sound cards i seem to get a lot of audio interfaces coming up in the search)
any other info you would deem important on this matter?
whats the difference between a sound card that goes inside your computer and one that is external, say, plugged in with firewire or midi. and which of these if any is better?
im confused . . . . . . .

better soundcard/audio interface means better i/o and better sound usualy better asio drivers etc!
midi doesnt transfer audio only midi data so an interfce for midi is a midi interface not audio interface!

better soundcards have better converters and thus reproduce and process with better quality the sound.
also they may have a dsp chip which means u can run some fx(usually provided with the soundcard)with no extra cpu overload-these are the dsp cards.
regarding the connections, the pci cards are the fastest, then come the f/w ones and then the usb ones if i m not wrong.
take care!

An external soundcard will give you better latency, it'll allow you to connect external hardware, such as synths etc, it'll allow you to monitor your music much better as it'll have a better frequency range..
You can also use it to record synths, vocals, guitars etc etc..
Finally some of them come with built in DSP effects which allow you to use them without using up any cpu..

You don't need an external soundcard to use hardware or record synths. I got a pci terratec phase 28 and it can do both things easily.
