Soundcard advice???

I'm about to buy a new computer (probably: AMD athlon 64 3000, 1gb RAM, AMD asus motherboard, 200gb + 80gb harddrives) and today i've done a lot of research about what soundcard to choose. Since I know nothing at all about musicproduction and beacause I'm on a budget, I've decided to start off with a soundcard that may cost up to 300$ (=220 EURO). Later on, when I can manage and control cubase (SX2 or SX3), I'll probably go for some hardware and more professional soundcard. Right now I prefer to use those extra money on a pair of good monitors instead. As for a start I'll probably only work with software. So the 4 soundcards that i got interested in are:

- M-Audio Delta 66 ( http://www.maudio.co.uk/products/en_gb/Delta66-main.html )
- M-Audio Audiohphile 192 ( http://www.maudio.co.uk/products/en_gb/Audiophile192-main.html )
- M-Audio Delta 1010LT ( http://www.maudio.co.uk/products/en_gb/Delta1010LT-main.html )
- M-Audio Delta 44 ( http://www.maudio.co.uk/products/en_gb/Delta44-main.html )

Which one do you think I should choose? Or maybe you have some other suggestion (but please remember that I don't want to spend more than 300$ which is the same as 220EURO)?

(I know that many of you think that I should go for a RME or creamware right now but my budget just doesn't allows that for the moment.)

Thank you for reading my post!

I just got the EMU 1212m card and i really like it.

It costs 199 €, and comes with good AD/DA converters and DSP effects.

EYB, what made you choose the EMU soundcard in front of the ones from M-Audio?

I just got delta 1010lt from thomann.de (220+shipping) and I am extremely happy. From m-audio I've only seen 192 and 410 before which is almost the same but without MIDI (410) and XLR (balanced mic/line connectors with preamp) so that friend of mine had to plug the mic on her external console and also had bought a 1x1 midi box.

66 and 44, I dont know about them. But it really depends on your needs.

In terms of quality I find it perfect, comparing to my previous SB. It's drivers also allow me now to compose music on my very old and slow 500mhz processor, at something like 5 to 15 ms latency which I would see only in my dreams before.

emu sounds good as well, but I finally went for delta

good luck           http://triplex.trance.net

Emu offer you same quality card + DSP, when Audiphile 192 (its comparison clone) no DSP except mixer without routing.
Maybe i'm subjective due to my Audiophile sucks but if you choose M-Audio who are damn fakers (RME sound cards, Evolution keyboards before m-a bought Evolution). Go for Triplex's series aka 44, 66, 1010 not Audiophile.

i've heard that 1010s are sometime noisy... is that true?

also, you cn't use emu FXs when at best sampling rate.

As said before the 1212m got superb A/D converters, the same A/D converters used in Digidesign's flagship Pro Tools HD 192 I/O interface.
Next point is the DSP, u get 20 hardware-accelerated effects which u can use directly (thanks for powerfx) as vst plugins.

The 20 fxs:

1-Band Para EQ
1-Band Shelf EQ
3-Band EQ
4-Band EQ
Auto-Wah
Chorus
Compressor
Distortion
Freq Shifter
Leveling Amp
Mono Delay 100
Mono Delay 3000
Stereo Delay 100
Stereo Delay 1500
Phase Shifter
Rotary
Speaker Simulator
Stereo Reverb
Vocal Morpher

and with the new driver update u get even more delays and other stuff.

This two points, quality and the dsp were the reasons to buy it, and i am happy that i bought it.            Signature

I have an Audiophile USB(it´s the same as 2496, but USB one), and I´m pretty satisfied.

I like this one cause it´s cheap and has midi in/out.

So if u want to use midi conections be sure if the sc has it. Or u will need to buy other device...           LOADING...

Just one thing:
The quality of the converters is not only determined by what chip they use, and more dependent on the analogue cirquitry around the chip.
So don't think that they have to sound like a very expensive interface because of the same chip.

I have not heard the EMU cards, but I'm sure they might be fine sounding cards and to have some DSP power on the card makes a lot of sense.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

Hello and thanks for your replies, people! So I think I will not choose the audiophile then. Maybe I'll buy the EMU 1212M, or some of the M-Audio Delta cards.

I second the opinion. I use an E-MU 1820 and it has performed flawlessly the 9 months I had it. I like to run an output send so that I can sample right off of video for vocal clips and also record a synth riffs or samples directly into wave lab for immediate processing. This can be done with any card I know, but you can select from a vast array of effects presets to record your signal without using any CPU resources. Even on the 1212, you should have I/O to burn.
