it really depends what you are after. If you are after a certain sound and need it at extreme high quality for some reason then get a nice highend mic (at least like a shure sm57) but if you are looking to record ambience and cool atmospheres almost anything will do. I personally walk around often with an old tape walkman with a mic. Everything is recorded very lofi and grungy, but thats exactly what I want in my atmospheres. Also I have a shitty shure mic I use in my house, and its also more than good enough for cool atmospheres and such. I want all those lofi artifacts anyhow, and sometimes I even turn my monitor levels up while recording with the mic in order to get some nice feedback in.
Again, if u want to record jazz drum then my setup is obviously shitty, but if you want to make your own soundscapes and textures then sometimes using shitty lofi gear will actualy give you some wierd artifacts, phase and frequency responces and for atmpsheres it can work out great.
Just grab some shitty mics and start experimenting .

95% of every voice/effect samples in the bufo music are made in the studio with our Mic..
We use a GA Project FC-3 with a Behringer Tube Ultragain preamp, and it works realy great.
Mic is a awsome sound tool for techno imo, you can make so many unique sounds, thats never heard before.
If you need more help, feel free to PM me.
