Sound Proof Room

Hi All,

I just moved into an apartment on the top floor. I do not have the luxury to make as much noise as I want anymore. Don’t want to upset my neighbors below floor and next door.

What can I do to prevent sound going downstairs and disturbing my neighbor?

I was thinking to get some thick foams. I also have a lot of curtain type of house wares lying around. I could hang those on the wall.

Any tips, tricks?

Many thanks.

Curtains won't help much, all they will do is absorb some high end but all the bass will still go through..To trap bass waves you need material that is at least 4 inches thick (like rockwool) and spaced 4 inches away from the walls..Thick foam mattresses could make a slight difference to sounds going through the walls into the next flat..You could also use some plasterboard on the walls if you can afford it..
There are other acoustic sound proofing solutions for the floor as well but unfortunately they're not that cheap!

Have a look in this forum, loads of useful info in there:

unfortunately sound proofing is quite expensive to do.

like s-cube said, you need mass air mass, so a wall, then a gap, then another wall. to do it properly you need to build a floating room, which is a room in a room with a small gap between them to satisfy the mass space mass. which is expensive.

the foam is good for fixing acoustics in a room, i.e. too much bass or very reverby, but not really that good for actual soundproofing. whatever you do make sure it is going to be effective for what you want, so you dont waste your money on stuff that wont have the desired results.
