hi,
my question is a littlebit difficult to explain, i hope you understand what i mean:

is it possible to influence a sound in certain parts of the stereo-field? i want to reduce some frequencies of a sound only in the center of the panorama (to make room for a second sound) but leave them untouched at the left and the right. or is this impossible due to the functionality of stereo?

thanx in advance,
martyn

well you can duplicate the channel twice, pan one to left, another to the right and another to the center. now equalize the centered channel. don't know if it's going to work good...

If you use Cubase you can use the ´Stereo Combined Panner´ to do that, just go to the mixer and right click on the pan field and select stereo combined panner on the track that you want, then u can set the left and right location to it...

Another way is to use S1-Imager or S1-Shuffler plug-ins that comes with the Waves Pack.

I don´t know if you will be able to reduce only some frequencies on the center, because with those methods you can only position the sound wherever you want on the stereo panaroma.

howabout using this tool to separate the left-right to middle-side signals with encode then apply eq to the center and then back to left-right with the decode?

However, i don't know well can you affect only the middle channel as the side channels kind of depend on it (i guess)...

But tell us if you try it out!

The following insert chain will do what you want:

Waves M/S encoder -> Stereo EQ -> Waves M/S encoder

With the inserts set up like this, the left side of the EQ affects the elements of the sound that are central in the stereo field, and the right side affects the stereo portion. So to EQ out eg. all the bass from the middle of the sound, cut the bass on the left channel of the EQ.

Thanx for your help to everybody!

Finally the M/S encoder in combination with a stereo-eq did it.

I wonder if with this technique it is also possible to use effects that are not able to modulate each channel seperately (like reverb, distortion, the whole bundle...).

Is there a way to do this, e.g. by routing each side of a channel (left/right) to a seperate group channel or by copying it and muting the relevant channels?

Nice new toy anyway

BTW: Colin, I listened to the OOOD-mix on your triskele-site this week and I LOVE it! Very impressing music and production! Somehow this thread was inspired by your great work           www.myspace.com/mentris
