Then quesion is should the trance artist know how to control the pro mastering software and machines?
Or should he know only the techniques to get a decent mix and an ok master? The final mastering should be left to the mastering studio, where people who know what they do work on it.

O-zen - the 'pro' mastering machine is a hardware piece that has the compressors and the limiters and the eq inside, run thru hardware circuits and not by algorhythms ( like wave mastering fx for instance )
Mike - Trance artists should know how to use the mastering tools imo, but it is unusable due to the fact that it is strongly unrecommended to give already mastered track to mastering.. Ususally that can create unwanted results ( phazing, distortion etc.. )
When u give track to mastering u give it as is and then the mastering engineer can apply the changes - if u have already dun compression and expansion to the track - what can he do?

So what the trance artists should do is to take care about the mixing, which is eqing, compressing specific channels, etc.
Am I correct?
What about Ultramaximizer? Apply or let the mastering do it?

yuli-you kind of right by saying that is no much to do on mastering after you do all the comp\exp\eqing but it's only in trance music as you know the mastering work for acustic recording is nessery and importent part in the production process and it made in mastering rooms with masterin eq devices that in allmost al cases is built for mastering and elso cost a lot more then ordernery eq, elso comp. and other devices. a lot of mastering engenners prefer to throgh the stereo track into tape machine to get the sound more roundy than the digital machines, and ofcourse the meters section is one very importent device in mastering rooms some times a 3-4 kinds of metering devices.
imo think that if trance artist do thier mastering work in those pro rooms all the production will sound alot diffrent.

When I said mastering I meant that after u record the track, with all the eq and compression upon lone channels, u can use mastering effects that are applyed to whole of the track. These are good for private use ( if u dj the trax and want to enhance sound ) but if u sell the track to a label that makes mastering to the whole compilation anyway, the private mastering is unnecessary and usually will not benefit to the sound of the track

We prefer the hardware approach too. Although we never let labels master our tracks. We always do it at a mastering studio with us present. We feel it is always better to get an experienced mastering engineer to listen to the tracks with a fresh ear and on highly profesional equipment. Ofcourse there is always the issue that when the lacquer is cut for the vinyl there will probably be some more tweaking done in the cutting room.
The mastering studio that we use has:
Summit DCL200 compressor
Manley Massive Passive EQ
vintage Neumann rack full of eq and filters
Weiss DS1 compressor
Weiss EQ1 equalizer
Crockwood mastering console
Apogee AD-8000 converters
Obviously not all of them used on the tracks just depending on what the engineer suggest usually... |

they are outrageously expensive, just like most of the stuff on that list.
although having spend 7 hours mastering the bigwigs album today (another 6 tomorrow probably) i must say they can be quite, to use the right word, digital i guess. |

SoundForge 6 is a great and very powerful tool for sound processing mastering , recording ,converting , it has also tools for synthesis, sampler , works with all DX and VST effects and even tools for editing soundtracks in video files .
U sure have to learn to use it but when u do u will see all the power it has .
But u sure can't compare it to Cubase or Logic since those are sequencers and soundforge is used to complete the functions they don't have and not instead of them .
