1stly it will b very very difficult for u to cope up wid both It and Sound Eng. Coz as far as i noe IT requires a lot of theorotical and practical application and Sound Eng. requires practical application again... so it would almost b impossible...

wad u can do is... continue wid IT and jus use softwares like Cubase and Fruity loops and acid pro or reason... dere r loads of dem.... wid dis u can continue ur studies as long as produce sum music and gain knowledge on ur own... coz imm sure Music is jus a passion and IT a profession... so think this way bro!!!

Lotta ppl do this... Study and jus learn producin music on deir own by usin the above mentioned softwares...

thts wad i did!!!

@ blueorb,

you dont really need to know much abt sound engineering if u wanna device an effect/plug in...... u just need good ears........ but since u dont know sound engineering u may end up devising something that already exists..........

its still sounds like a lot of fun...........
wish i could do something like this.........

you need to have good theoritical knowledge too bro if ur gonna study sound ... but ur doin IT ... if thats what u wanna do ... do it ... u cud always start prducing at the side and ready online about sound n all ... cos theres alot to learn ... i did mine too .. at digital academy ... and theres alot more involved than just having good ears .. off course thats very important ... get online .. search for some good sits that read about the basics of sound ...

u like it ... then think about it ...

Building sound algorithms usually requires some knowledge of engineering mathematics. Of course, you can always download an implementation of a Chebyshev filter, or an FFT routine, and wrap your VST/Audio Unit around it. Again requires programming knowledge, typically C++.

As an IT major you might consider ways to organize sound material. As you well know, IT tends to involve either the organization of computer networks, or the organization of databases. Most audio production involves archives of many gigs of sound material (samples). Or perhaps some form of network cooperation between artists. For example, I work remotely by using FTP transfers. Perhaps there some website idea that could facilitate the same thing, much like the CVS source control that programmers use to build open-source projects. Programs like Cubase do offer means to cooperate via network, i've never used it so I don't know how good it is.

good luck,
dean

you need a good solid understanding of your DSP (digital signal processing), if you wanna tread on any audio project, i did a project on a voice recognition system which involved some dsp and it got rather complicated...

Cubasing is like Freebasing, just with audio.
Both cost more than you can afford, and leaves you sitting in a dark room with no life, craving for more.
