How would you design a sound for a rotating graphical element? Its rotating , around from right to left 360° not from up to down cycle. Rotation is probably the wrong word , my english still lacks but I hope you get me.
I'm interested in the rotation , the graphical panorama aroundation translated into a musical context.
Am also not interested in any reverb automation suggestions. Also lfo to pan is crap since I don't know the exact timing of the rotation, it has to be in sync (audio with visual material).
I think I bounce my stereo sound to multiple (double) mono and automate the pans individualy. Just first thaught in tired state. What you think abou that?
I'm not interested in any sound colour etc or something maybe soundcolour in relation to rotation could be interesting .
I'd be glad for a useful clear logical advice.
Thanks.
ps other ideas are recording somethign properly.. but I'd like to solve this with synthesis. Probably not with subtractive but for rotation pan is definitly an operator on this mission.

is that thing rotating always at the same speed? if not i guess the easiest (but tedious) way is automating the pan.
for colouring stuff uhbik-f's head turner preset comes to my mind. iirc you can tweak it so that it flanges up or down when it's in the front/right/back/left or even automate the panning and flanging manually.
that's all i can think of right now, i hope it helps. |

hey dudeee
i had some thoughts about that and wanna share. so.... imo it depends on how your graphic looks like, what direction and how fast it will move. is your graphic round and smooth one should find a modulation which charmes. if its sharp and spiky maybe the more rough i´d go for my modulation techniques...
to give an example, theres a lot of ways to apply movement to your sound. i love surge doin most of my sound design jobs- give it´s rotator fx a try. if the sound should not rotate, one can apply lfo modulating stuff thats interesting to the ear and gets an airy effect, like the "pw" of a wavetable containing not too much overtone content. or give it a sharp waveform and try different filters. for the edgy type id modulate a comb filter. but i tend to use this for stretchy type of sounds. if your graphic is not "growing", one could leave this... the lfo can easily adjusted by ear, know you can do that
besides i like the thingy mentioned above. a flanger is often used on my side to give the updown feeling....
speak soon dude, all the best. cheers: stephan

You beat me to it Wizack... Can be achieved with a Doppler effect vst or through a combination of pitch, balance and volume automation, when the object comes closer the pitch curve goes slightly up, reaches it's top hight when it is directly by you and when it goes away the pitch lowers rapidly and then slowly lowers further. Similar curve with volume. Follow the picture with your balance fader... Or 5.1 panner ( if you're lucky enough to have one) and you're there .

Oli Larkin has his old plugs for free on his site which includes an autopanner. If you use Ableton it comes with an autopan but I dont like it, if you have Ableton as well as Max for Live Monolake's doppler plug is free on maxforlive.com and is great.
Oli Larkin's free plugs are all good, I recommend checking em out His non-free synth looks neat too, its based around the Shepard Tone auditory illusion you probably dont know you already know

Reaper includes a 64 bit surround plug very similar to the Longcat plug. Except you can use it free with Reaper's <6mb demo.
Also Cakewalk's Sonitus suite includes a surround.

thank you guys .. very inspiring. @ Padmapani - the graphic element comes nearer with a bit slower rotation and as it is in front or in total focus it will be a bit faster and stays on a bit faster level for a few rotations
@ Stephan - thx & nice long time no speak
..all posts are interesting and useful.
.. I just think I was wrong , I will need reverb and automation of predelay since pan paramer is only 180° if I stay with my idea. Or I go for a plug in or Stephs ideas.. or a combo . However nice! Thanks
ps.. I could go for surround /this would be simple/ but it is for stereo.
