I wouldn't normally post equipment advice requests because I am happy to do my own research, but I'm totally stumped by this.
I've been using my Virus TI as a soundcard for almost a year because I've been too poor to afford anything new - or at least I didn't want to buy something cheap and regret it later.
I use a high end DAC (Benchmark DAC-1) so I don't care about sound card output quality (I'll just use the SPDIF out, which doesn't affect sound quality using the DAC)
There is *SO* much choice of cards and all I want is to be able to plug all my devices in and maybe have a couple of spare inputs. But I'd like decent converters as I'll be recording vocals eventually.
My devices are
Virus TI
Nord 2X
Microphone (haven't purchased this yet)
Toneport UX1
I'm pretty sure I've got everything I'll ever want (famous last words) so I only need enough inputs for these.
Usual stuff like stability and low latency is essential.
Also, I need to be able to record into soundforge/audition from within Windows from a DVD or Movie file for samples. ie - when I hit record, it records the sound from the stereo mix.
I tried to solve this all myself - so about 6 months ago I bought a Motu 828 Mk II. I thought for the price it looked like a very reasonable piece of gear.
A week later and it was already back in the shop. The biggest piece of junk I've ever had the misfortune of wasting my time with. I couldn't record sound in Windows, it crashed all the time, latency was awful.. there were about 15 fatal issues with it that I just couldn't live with.
Anyway. I've listed my requirements. Suggestions would be fantastic.
Thanks everyone. |

I dont know the amount of money you want to give but the Fireface 400 is a "standard" solution for your needs, if you go further with equipment then you might need something with more in/outs, but this will cover you and has decent converters and mic preamp and lots of routing possibilities within the channels in the mixer to record sound the way you want, i am very satisfied with it
anything better will go over 1000euro and anything worse, is just worse
maybe check for used ones too like Metric Halo, or a FF800,, depends too much on the amount youll spend again , good luck

If you want to record directly within windows, i think that eliminates your possibilities to use a external soundcard. I have never been able to do that with any of my previous external soundcards.
Anyone that can confirm ?

you mean without a sequencer? i can record whatever comes out of my master out, but using the sequencer always

can you playback audio with other applications when wavelab is running? im asking because i dont know if it lets you , i cannot when having nuendo running for example, if there is such a possibility i think you are able to record the signal, will try to find a wavelab version to test that and tell you

I've not heard of Sound Trap? Sounds exactly like what I need.
My first ever card, M-Audio 2496 had no trouble recording samples in wavelab. In fact, that card was a rock, I never had any trouble with it at all.
I'm pretty much set on buying and an Echo Audiofire 8 now. The 12 doesn't have SPDIF out for some reason?! |

No problem playing audio, the problem is to capture it without having to reroute it to a line input via a coax cable

ok then you are right. i was thinking it that way, send the signal to spd/if etc

yes and reroute the in to the out with a cable, then make a new bus to take signal from spd/if out and record it
this way i can record any vst too when playing as midi inside the sequencer(nuendo) instead of bouncing process, but i have to solo the track (because spd/if carries the hole master out signal, therefore everything thats playing atm)
thats why i ask if you can playback audio when wavelab is open, i was thinking the same process, making the routings and a new bus to take the signal from the spdif and record that

RME 800 if you can afford it
probably the best and simple choise
for budget choise maybe some nice MOTU or even M-Audio why not...
and what about scope? those are not simple but worth the extra headache
