Cubasing is like Freebasing, just with audio.
Both cost more than you can afford, and leaves you sitting in a dark room with no life, craving for more.

@ Bad Sector

Here's what i was doing until a month before when i set up my new desktop. I have for the last 3 years an Acer laptop which i used for producing, surfing, downloading etc. I had it connected to my Tascam US-122 USB soundcard and two external firewire hard disks. The last year to be more specific i turned off my laptop less than 10 times and this was because it was frozen or because i had to restart it due to software installations. I remember a period of 3 months that my laptop was running day and night, and i'm not joking about it. Until now no problem, except that the external power supply of the laptop died and i had to buy a new one. But my soundcard or the firewire disks never had any problem and they were always connected and powered.

I hope i answered your questions.......

Cheers

Pfft, thats bullshit. As long as you have a proper cooling system, keeping your pc on forever shouldnt be a problem (with "forever" I mean as long as a normal pc's lifetime, cuz youll probably change some parts in the comp during the next 3 years, right? )

My pc has been on for about a year now... only quick reeboots after installing programs etc...

that's a very good quality laptop that u have there... But no laptop is made to operate like that so i wouldn't advise anyone to do this... Even with normal computers i wouldn't advise it anymore because they aren't built like they used to... My 386, 486 and pentium had no problems running day in day out... But starting from the generation after that i experienced increasing problems if i let my computers run for more then 48hrs. Not that it's disastrous, but i don't trust em as much as i did those machines... to get back on topic... I don't think that ur firewire device will have problems running 24/7... I assume that it doesn't have fans, and that u put it in a place where it's cool and out of direct sunlight... Add to that the fact that it runs on relatively low voltage and there is not a lot that can go wrong...

I was adviced that it´s ok to let the desktop on for a long time. Why? Cause when u power on/off u are at "critical stage on eletric system". So it's easier to burn/damage your pc when powering it than using long time.

But as FREGGLE said I experienced his problems. And not after days of work... When I'm making a track, sometimes I need restart the machine. The difference is HUGE! But dont really know if its a PC or a SOUNDCARD issue.           LOADING...

coff coff

computers are built to work during several day, months or years

it's also an industry trick to run a new one during 48h without rebooting to see if there's any problem (if the computer has to be reboot during that test, that's because somethings terrible wrong with it and the faster it gets replaced the better)

many small firms have servers running for years wich are computers like mine and yours or worst for things like mail, routing, firewall, etc! if a computer had to be reboot every 48hrs they could not be used as servers

as mentioned, turning on and off is a more demanding task for any type of machine including computers... just out of curiosity, some industrial machines are never turned off during their life time, excluding maintenance time          roll a joint or STFU :)
