I have a motu 828 mk 2, and it works beautifully. However, sometimes I don't want to haul it around, as it's 19" rack size.
I picked up an echo Indigo DJ PCMCIA card, with 2 stereo 1/8" outputs, and it sounds very very good. Changed laptops & had a grainy sound until I found a utility on the echo website for laptops with an ENE cardbus (pcmcia), and it works flawlessly again.
Motu 828 mk 2 = $700 on eBay
Echo Indigo DJ = $160 on eBay
No other sound card in this price range is as good.
I've had nothing but trouble from M-Audio products (2 sound cards & a midi controller).
Stick with firewire over USB if you go that route!
Good luck!

I have an M-Audio Firewire 410 and I've used it with my Compal CL56-based Centrino laptop on stage and in the studio many many times with no issues. It sounds lovely too. I think some machines get on better with it than others though.
I use an RME Multiface at work and can never recommend it highly enough, although it's more than twice as expensive as my M-Audio. If you can afford it, go for it. Pristine and faultless, and it comes with fantastic monitoring and analysis software.
However what I really want is a Motu Traveller.

It's only a box just big enough to fit a PCI card, but you need to have a power source for it of course.
It will run of 12v, but to have an extra battery as well can be a bit awkvard if you want to make music on the move.
Personally i never bother to make music on the bus really and can live with having to be dependent on power for speakers and soundcard.
