The reason is that someone who has already learned ways and methods of doing things at college will have a hard job unlearning it and learning the way the studio wants things done,

If people are that stupid and ONLY can practice what they learn and have no distance from formal knowlege they dont really have anything to do in a studio.´

I´m currently a student att SAE in Sweden and it´s not fundamental learning. They teach facts and fomal stuff tooo, when it comes to the practial stuff we are free to do what we want, there are no formal rules we have to follow! If it sounds good it sounds good... We have many different drills to learn how to adapt to various situations.

Also sound engineering diploma students can apparently be pains in the butt to work with as they assume they know it all... after all, they just spent 2 years and $3000 at a college!

Just what I heard...

I cant speak for those people but I have not any problems with other students with diplomas. and I agree with you 2 years are´nt much but it gives understanding and base to stand on which can be developt... bla bla....

Colin - with all respect ot what you heard - I wanna ask you - Do you think that at Sony or other big studios there are ppl that not finished at least 2nd degree???
i am quite sure that most of these are 3rd degreed ppl who finished really big places for sound engineering around the world

heh. believe me the sound engineers at deutch grammophone have doctorates. you gotta do what seems best for YOU. some people feel like they need to go to school, some people feel like they need to learn on their own or in a studio producing rock music.

I am currently attending Ex'pression near San Francisco. It is expensive but has lots of hands on experience. Also able to get internships to places like Skywalker Sound, Pixar, local studios, and more.
