Teachers is the most important, and i have to admit that there are people with knowledge and passion there, at least where im going, but you never have the real chance to discuss deeper with a person, you know, music and production is ideas,
techniques that have to be discussed in person, the teaching process is a kind of routine, most realy big engineers have become good, because they were/are talented, because they have passion, because they sit and discuss elements of sound, their techniques with other engineers and that is a huge huge factor imho
Besides personal work and training, i really dont care if the other guy is dedicated to the rock/metal sound, its his/hers approach to the sound im looking at and how he/she treats the sound and the gravity in the mix.
So again if you are lucky to make friendship with someone thats willing to show you or discuss, then you are lucky.
And another thing that i really hate sometimes is that some people are really snob when it comes to electronic music, like its for the garbage and not worth but thats another story (taste is like farts )
Id really love to have a lesson called "gravity" and someone to teach that as detailed as possible, but i guess thats what books are for.

Very interesting topic !
In one point i fully agree with you: Private Audio Institutes cost too much money for what they´re offering you!
But... i ask myself, guys,if some of you are so unsatisfied with the education at those institutes, why didnt you do another kind of education?;)
Just to get this clear now:
If you wanna be able to use audio hard&software, you can visit SAE or whatever.Or just learn by yourself.
If you wanna be able to REALLY UNDERSTAND Audio Hard&software and whats going on there, you have to study Electrotechnology/ Transmission technology or smth similar!
Disregarding all the crying around SAE,both ways,SAE or University help interested people on the quest of understanding and making sound. And isnt that the Goal after all?;)
