Hi there guys! Well, I'm almost decided to get this laptop:

Sony VAIO C140G/B

* Screen: 13.3-inch screen WXGA (1280 x 800) with XBRITE-ECO (glossy finish)
* Color: Espresso Black with copper accents
* Processor: 1.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5500
* Hard Drive: 120 GB hard drive (SATA, 5400RPM)
* Memory: 1 GB RAM (PC4200, 533 MHz, DDR2 SDRAM, 2 x 512 MB) -- 2 GB max memory
* Optical Drive: multi-format/dual-layer DVD/CD burner
* Ports and Slots: Two USB 2.0, one FireWire 400 port, one ExpressCard 34, one S-Video, memory card reader adapter, headphone / line-out, microphone-in, modem, 10/100 Ethernet
* Wireless: Tri-mode Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g)
* Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (128 MB of shared RAM)
* Operating System: Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (Windows Vista capable and Windows Vista Premium ready)
* Dimensions: 9.28 inches, 12.98 inches, 1.47 inches (depth, width, thickness)
* Weight: 5.1 pounds, travel weight of 5.8 pounds with the adapter and battery

I believe that this should be sufficient for tracking at home, I'll be using Live 6..

Now, my question is, has anyone experienced any problems with the Sony Vaio's?

Thanks in advance.. b00m!          serz/xynapse

I had a VAIO before and it was a really nice laptop.

They don't like being dropped though.

i have no personal experience yet, gonna get myself a laptop next week, from dell, similar specifications as yours..

just one thing; if you have a soundcard with firewire 800;
note that this one only has "one FireWire 400 port". i read in the "mother of all soundcards" that, if pci is out of the question, firewire 800 is best, followed by usb2, then by firewire 400..

good luck

In Japan Sony's are viewed as having cool gadgets, but generally breaking down totally in about 2 or 3 years. Fujitsu's are somewhat better. Toshiba's have a good reputation for being solid as do NECs.           New Album: Jikkenteki - Flights Of Infinity

I just bought a Sony vaio laptop for production. It seems very stable so far and has the TI chipset which is good for FW sound cards. It does seem prone to ground hum though whhich I plan on fixing with a universal power supply. A pain in the arse, but not too drastic a problem.

Be carefull with purchasing a dell at the moment. Serious problems with firewire incompatability in some of the 945 chipsets. Aside from the built in FW not working (not uncommon in some laptops), there are problems with certain express card FW interfaces not working with the intel chipset used in the 9400 dells.

Also, some apparent problems with Toshibas too. Fan clicking on and off causing audio glitches.

Yeah, I'll echo this statement, my Vaio's screen backlight burned out in only 1 year, and I had to replace it, and the RJ-45 ethernet connector stopped working. The battery would only hold a charge for 5 minutes after one year.

I treated it really well, and these things happened anyway. Then my friend dropped it and broke the AC Adapter connector, so no battery and no AC meant it was finally dead.

I really liked the laptop though I would definitely get one again if I thought it would hold together for > 1 year.

i'm gonna buy a dell lapotop too as soon as possible, now i'm little bit confused! i've a motu ultralite and you know it's a firewire 400 soundcard, sony vaio are expensive and dell was a great choice just because i could decide the hardware inside (for ex. HD 7200 r), and know what can i do? i'm selling my powerbook because it has not power enought but i don't have 2000 euro for a macbook pro! So many problems with these laptopos!!!
