I'm surprised that no-one else has mentioned this yet, but then maybe you're all too busy ordering it after the email from Evan on the weekend.

http://www.somniasound.com/releases.htm

Here's the details from the Somnia website:

Quote:

“with this album, I wanted to focus on the essence of melody and expose it in a raw form through the electronic medium. the source of the main melodies came from repetitive hooks I found myself sporadically singing or humming during day to day business. think of the joyful tunes whistled during a walk. these melodic mantras seem to pop up out of nowhere and go on repeating forever.

when I'd notice this, I'd hang onto the melody until I could get to the studio and bang it out, no matter how obvious or straightforward it was. once the main melodies and inflections were out, I could carefully construct an audio bedding for them and see where it led. from a larger perspective, I felt that the search for these melodies was similar to unearthing subconscious archetypes that drive reality. the process was like discovering an ever-flowing undercurrent of reality that can be translated directly into melody.

in this case, it felt that the source of them all must absolutely be love.” - kilowatts

limited to 777 copies worldwide, soy inks on recycled paper, sewn and sealed in wax with incredible cover art by ray massini

I haven't heard the samples. Needless to say, it is ordered.

I've really been looking forward to this one! Kilowatts work always pleases.

well, I just ordered it.

until a few days ago I always thought that the somnia releases are nice and definitely unique but not really my cup of tea.
just couldn't connect to them.

now, on the day that DjSchofield posted the info about kilowatts - "undercurrent" I checked the release page on the somnia website with no expectations to hear something that will blow my mind away and then - bemm !! I was enchanted by the sounds.

in the first few seconds I thought that the music player on the somnia web is just working slowly and therefore it stops every second but I immediately turned the volume up a bit and realized that this is just the way the track is.

so I kept listening to all the tracks and I was fascinated by the strange sound manipulations and weird yet catchy melodies that they all contained.

so thanks DjSchofield for posting about this.

I also noticed 'optical flow' by motionfield that I haven't noticed before and from the samples on somnia and from the longer ones on the Ultimae shop and also from the one full track from the album on motionfield's myspace page I really loved it so I ordered it as well.

I never heard about these 2 guys up until now and I'm happy I found out about them thanks to DjSchofield, this forum and my constant urge for searching for new music.

I really don't have a lot of money at the moment but I just couldn't help myself

cheers !

Hey Bodhisattva, you won't regret ordering Motionfield's album. There's some beautiful tunes on Optical Flow, especially nice to hear first thing in the morning. Bliss!

I still haven't listened to the samples of Undercurrent, nor has it arrived in my mail box yet (it seems it was only sent on Friday). Anyway, I'm eargerly awaiting it, and I'm now more excited to hear it by your words! Hopefully the international postman won't stop for any unnecessary cups of tea.

Hey DjSchofield, it seems that they are working quite slow, I wonder when they are going to send my order...

how long does it usually takes for them to send the package after that they received the order and payment ?

my order status is still " awaiting for shipment"

in your case,4 days after is quite a lot I think. I hope it's not a usual thing for them.

well, never mind...
Evan just answered my email,he reminded me that the CD's are hand made, which is a fact that I forgot to take into consideration, and he said that since they have a new release it takes a while to sew every cd,and seal it.

he also said that they do shipments once a week so my order should go out in the next few days.

Can't wait.

cheers !

I didn't think of that, but yeah, I suppose had sowing the covers would take a bit of time... I just assumed (incorrectly) that all that would be done before the release date.

I"m sure they won't be too far away. The international post is pretty good these days...

We try to get as many CD's done before each release as we can, but in this case the sewing machine broke just as we announced the new CD. It's finally fixed, but now we have to create as many as quick as possible. Each CD is hand scored, folded a number of times, sewn slowly and carefully, then sealed in wax and left for the wax to dry. It's an extremely laborious process, so sometimes we're trying desperately to catch up!

well like I said this is my first buy from somnia, so I never really held one of these CD's in my hands before but from your description of the process I can say that I really appreciate what you are doing and it sounds very special and as a music passionate and collector I always love and appreciate a good artwork.

can't wait to get my copies...

anyway, thanks again for your kind service.

cheers !

It is always special when they the parcel arrives. The artwork and packaging is always top notch.

It's good to hold it and know that it is hand made.

However after the first order, all the others i've had i keep having trouble with the wax seal, trying to undo it without damaging the wax or the cardboard. But anyway, i think it has more to do with my skill (or lack thereof) than with the product itself.

What a gorgeous sounding release.
This label has me hooked as each album they bring out manages to venture into new territory with amazing success.

I received my CD from somnia yesterday and after a couple of listens I must say that this is absolutely an amazing album !

the music is extremely unique and very moving !
this guy really knows how to manipulate sound in a fascinating way.

there are some very emotional and dramatic sonic maneuvers in this album yet it's quite peaceful and full with odd captivated serenity.

beautiful melodies !

and the artwork is something really special indeed !

this release is pure beauty from every aspect.
one of the best albums I heard.
and surly will be in high rotation in my CD player.

lots of depths to discover in here and I'm only at the beginning.

cheers !
