I've heard motionfield since the days of thinnerism, I had good experiences with for instance the lovely Coffee Cargo track

This new piece of art sounds astonishingly joyful and beautiful, so I took the freedom of ordering a few of these babies while they're still there... yummy. And thanks.

Nice job on the artwork, and the foldout cardboard works a treat, much easier than trying to pull the cd out from the full sleeve.

Sorry Damon,

continue I will...

I have to say I'm really enjoying the euphonious journey that Petter Friberg (aka Motionfield) is taking me on each time I pop this little nugget into my cd player.

I say “little” because it is only 8 tracks, but don't let that deter you. At first I reckoned there was room for more tracks, but then I decided that quantity isn't always better than quality. I'd rather have a nice little journey in 8 tracks than a trek that seems to take too long to reach its destination in 10 or 11 tracks. In this case, it’s the former that holds sway.

So, here we have a meandering low-bpm journey that shuffles along between moments spent waiting or contemplating, and others walking along a country road or floating along a city street wrapped in one’s own consciousness, safe from the concerns of seemingly myriad other beings flitting about on their ultimately meaningless errands. The percussion never really intrudes into the foreground, but discreetly hangs back and moves things along like an unobtrusive series of well-mannered ushers.

Based on what Evan has written in his synopsis, this album does what it says on the packet: a “stroll through misty locales” sums it up perfectly. Apparently Mr Friberg wrote this music and dedicated it to his daughters. Sitting in my back yard yesterday morning and enjoying the sounds of the optical flowing and the birds singing I felt that this would be a great cd for kids to listen to, especially as a calming agent before they nod off for their afternoon nap. My little girl seems to enjoy it, though she’s only 5 months old and seems to enjoy all music, but don’t let that detract from her liking of this.

I don’t really know the music of casino vs. japan, ulrich schnauss (except far away trains passing by), and boards of Canada, but for mine, this album sits very nicely between Loscil – Plume and Lusine ICl – Language Barrier, and you could probably squeeze Kiln – Dusker in there at a pinch as well.

In short, I think this is a great release. I don’t have a great deal of music like this, but I really like it. And I have a feeling I would also like Casino vs Japan and Boards of Canada if I ever get around to giving them a go…

So thank you Somnia, Evan, Ray (for the great artwork once again) and Petter most of all for this great little journey. Optical Flow certainly sits well within the world of Somnia (although I don’t yet have Dreamtime Submersibles) where every release thus far has its own unique flavour and texture and hits the mark.

With that said, I’m probably going to continue to let Motionfield punctuate my days over the coming weeks and eagerly await the next few releases that Evan has alluded to. My appetite is once again whetted!

I've been listening to this album over and over and over again since I got my CDs (well, actually even before, using the website previews) - and I can't really seem to get enough of it.

Thanks, Mr. Friberg, you've done a marvellous job.

Beautiful deep flowing ambient.
soft and strange,atmospheric and emotional.

this album is quite addictive with it's hypnotic sensitive melodies and delightful rhythm structures.

very individual sound and style with a mesmerizing cinematic feel to it.

wonderful job from Petter Friberg, high quality compositions with excellent production.

another release from somnia which I absolutely Love .

Happy I bought a copy of it recently,in these cases it'a always better late than ever...

cheers !

There's already a new album on thinner records (http://www.thinner.cc/pages/releases/releases_detail.php?id=thn107)

I wonder why nobody here mentioned anything about it yet.

Nevertheless, Optical Flow is a great album, i like the mood it creates.

it's a pity that it's only available digitally.

I always prefer a CD.

I didn't realise there is the new one. I'm glad it's available in lossless.

The samples sound quite good. Not as much rhythm this time around, it seems.

I reckon it'll make a great companion to Optical Flow.

Maybe someone (or me, if i'm first) should start a new thread when they pick it up...
