To try to sum it all a little, if i got the flow of this thread right.. xD if being musical directly refers to being intelligent then making some awesome tune must imply that you got some brains after all.. cause you know, i can hardly believe that any composer irrelevant of the music genre which "crafted" some musical master piece people recognized as such, was some lame and dumb retard who tried to randomly line up some notes and see what comes out of it.. xDD
Anyway, last months i somehow realized that making some top quality psy trance from scratch requires great amount of time, devotion, research on the subject.. and lots of crazy other shit.. xDD Being able to master the track perfectly could easily or nesecary involve some knowledge in physics.. 'cause sound is mathematicaly measurable variable, and dealing with it's frequencies in a mix, for the purpose of making every little sound felling right is definitely a clever and precise thing to do.. lol... xDD i think i wen't to far with this one..
maybe someone will get it..!! xDD |

The samples comment wasn't totally serious, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were true for some people .
One can have lots of musical knowledge they apply to their productions, but that doesn't mean it's something intelligent. A lot of producers who make techno, house, etc do exactly what you described, so why not consider their music intelligent?
Intelligence should be something above and beyond the norm, I don't see this being applicable to psy productions. We're all using computers to process audio inputs and applying variations to them through synthesis and structure. Nothing about that sounds intelligent to me.
I think if anyone wants to hear "intelligence" in music they should listen to some old classical pieces.

No disrespect, but I think its a bit hypocritical to say that synthesis and all that goes into that isn't intelligent, but classical pieces are?
It's all just as subjective when you really boil it down. I consider some psychedelic music to be equally as beautiful and complex/intricate as old classical music, just using different tools to pull the mental strings. The world of sound design opens up an entirely new world of possibility that did not have the potential to exist before computers and synths - and I think to dumb all that down to 'we're all using computers to process audio inputs and apply variations' is just as silly as saying that classical music is just people plucking strings and blowing into tubes.
Getting into production these last 8 months or so has really shown me just how deep some of this music is in terms of emotional expression, complexity of arrangement and sound design...etc. I could go on forever.

I put intelligence in quotes for a reason .
What you said can apply to any form of music. Why is psytrance so special?
I'm just ranting because it seems like a lot of people have their head up their ass when it comes to this subject. I've still yet to see a convincing reason why people think psytrance is intelligent, yet so many people make this claim outright. It can be intelligent TO them, but it's not an intrinsic property of psytrance. Why are the only ones making these claims those who listen to the music?

I think its fairly simple as to why so many people have their 'heads up their asses' in regard to this topic...they are biased towards the music because they like it and maybe it had a large personal impact on them, so they are attempting to express this but unfortunately resort to calling it 'intelligent' - which is bullshit, I already hate genrefication of music but when I see "IDM" I throw up in my mouth a little bit.
I was about to spew off some generalizations about what people think and why they think it - but I have no fucking clue what people thing. But heres what I think:
This music is special to me because while listening to it I have had life changing experiences that have enriched my life and changed the way I perceive myself and the world around me...and the community surrounding this music is incredibly diverse and to me exemplifies some of the better qualities in human beings - or at the very least has a much higher potential for these types of experiences than 'traditional' music.
I have been to punk shows, I have been to rock shows, I have been to folk music shows, 'regular' trance shows. It is not even remotely close to the same thing as a multi-day open air psy festival. The intentions of the artists are different, the intentions of the people are different - its definitely fuckin different. At least thats how it feels to me.
So, why is psytrance so special? There are a lot of reasons, and the music is definitely a large portion of the experience but its the tip of the iceberg. No music is psychedelic in and of itself, the psychedelia happens in your head.
Its tricky! I want so badly to agree with you and say that intelligence isn't an intrinsic part of psytrance (and I would definitely agree that theres a lot of unintelligent copy/paste psy), but at the same time I have something pulling me the other way when I listen to stuff that resonates with me and sets my brain on fire.
Maybe its safe to say that while not all psy is in and of itself intelligent just because it is psy, there is some psy out there that is incredibly well crafted. I am loathe to use the word intelligent because as you have pointed out that term doesn't really mean shit. If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Maybe the one with head up his ass is you.
No trying to be offensive but you are asking for a scientific proof of superior intelligence in psytrance.
Of course it is not an intrinsic property of the genre, not all strawberries are sweet either.
If you can't really see intelligence in music, and / or psytrance what are you doing here then? or trying to prove?
I've heard many tracks that go beyond standard "intelligence" in psytrance and made my mind expand.

I think the problem is your point of view... if you consider Intelligence to be something above the norm then you won't find almost anything of it in psy.
Your definition sticks more to the concept of "Genius" or "Prodigy". That goes beyond the norm, but for me, the act of producing and creating anything out of chaos is pure intelligence.
Yes, it is not new that most psy seems methodical and out of a recipe, that might be your reason to take all the intelligence out of it but it is still there, waiting for the right eyes to see.
So take your head out of your arse and look at the marvelous and intelligent world of psytrance which you happen to like and produce or go to the mathematical metal realm, maybe go compose an opera or invent a new really intelligent genre and stop ranting about subjective issues that conclude nowhere.

I got the impression throughout that Ascension was merely playing Devil's Advocate for the sake of the discussion, while also being a tiny bit ticked @ people using the world intelligent to describe music
It's not like he's some psy hater; he wouldn't be here and he surely wouldn't have racked up 3k posts if he was

You got it. Sorry if I didn't emphasize this enough, I was merely ranting for the sake of ranting (it's just something I do ). The main point I was trying to get across was that I don't understand why some people assume just because it's psy, it's intelligent music. The difference between this style of edm and others isn't terribly large, so we shouldn't think of psytrance as exclusively intelligent music without considering what constitutes "intelligence" to each individual. Obviously this is all within each individual and there is no right/wrong, but it just never made sense to me. Again, just opinionated ranting here, to each their own.
I like to prod people on their views occasionally. I see nothing wrong with forcing people to come up with explanations for why they see something in a certain way. I wasn't trying to find someone saying that x is the intelligence in psytrance, I was just trying to get those who make this claim define what this x was and see if it's something I hadn't thought about that actually was exclusive to psy.
Good discussion!
@Sub's comment "less talk, more work": I was/am posting this all while at work
