Something I'd like to clear up

Well, I don't know how much I'm actually going to be clearing up, but this is something I've wanted to say for a while. Ever since I joined Isratrance a couple months ago I have read post after post of people 1. Complaining about the fact that there are different sub-genres of psy, and 2.Being hostile towards the dark, "psycho-mimetic" stuff. Addressing the first one, I don't see what the big problem is with genre-typing. I remember reading an interview with Paul Van Dyk a few years back and he seemed to think that all electronic music should be called "electronic music" or "dance music" because he was sick of all the sub-genres. Well, that seemed ridiculous to me and it's just as ridiculous when talking down on sub-genres of psytrance. The reason is very simple: Say I'm looking at a flyer and wondering if I should go to the party depicted on the flyer. Unless I like every variation of "dance music" I'm not entirely sure I want to go. But I wouldn't know, because the flyer says "electronic music". The same goes for psy. If someone tells me that there is going to be a darkpsy party at venue A, and a melodic full-on party at venue B, isn't it nice that I have the option to go somewhere that I am reasonably sure I will have a good time? I will still go to the more melodic/progressive/or whatever else parties sometimes, but I like to at least know what I'm getting into. On to point 2:
I...love...the dark stuff. I see a lot of people bad mouthing dark psy, or whatever you wish to call it, and that is totally fine but I think the sub-genre is a little misunderstood. First of all, I am not a Satan Worshiper. But if I was, I don't see what would be wrong with that considering that none of these human created deities really exist anyway ("God is too big to fit in one religion". Too true). Maybe the thing that puts a lot of people off is the paranoid sounds (not to mention the screaming and sounds of torture) that are often in this particular kind of music. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a lot of the really old school psytrancers see this as kind of a slap in the face to the spirit that originally spawned this music. Well, I am truly sorry for them, but this is amazing psychedelic music that just happens to resonate with people like me. My favorite game is Silent Hill, my favorite movie is Apocalypse Now... but I am not violent at all and I make it a top priority in life to be kind to people/animals/ or whatever else. I just love dark art. All I'm saying is (and maybe I could have said it in fewer words) please don't stereotype the people who just seem to be more comfortable on the darker side of things. It's all art and it's all beautiful, light or dark. By saying it doesn't have a positive spiritual effect on people just because it sounds "evil" is really short-sighted. By the way, I think "evil" makes for great fiction but I don't believe it actually exists (I don't believe in "good" either. It's all relative). Xenomorph's music is "evil" but I do not think it pleases the dark lord. It does please me though. Well, that's just my opinion and I really hope this does not turn into another genre bashing thread (I'm guilty too). If you have anything to share about why a certain kind of psy, or art in general, resonates with you (not that it hasn't been done before, but what hasn't?), please contribute. It will only help us to understand each other better.

Cool post. I agree with everything you said, although I haven't come across anyone saying that dark psy destroys the spirit of psy. That's a new one for me.

Personally, ever since I started hearing all the dark releases that started flooding the psy-market at the beginning of 2005, i hated it with a passion. A couple weeks ago I stumbled across a Nuclear Ramjet track ("Operation Northwood" to be more specific. This track almost made me cry, lol, but that's a whole nother story) and it totally blew me away. What I like about the track is it's simplicity and it's super high quality mastering. Something about high production quality seems to make me enjoy dark psy more. In general though, I still dont like most dark psy , but like this case proves, there's always exceptions. Most of the time I'm into very melodic and structured stuff; what a lot of people on these boards call "nitzonot", or something like that. I made started a thread similar to this one about a month or 2 ago, except it was about the "moods" of all the subgenres of psy music, and how even though some are happy, sad, evil, or manic, they are all psy. Even more, they all very distinguishible subgenres.

I went back and checked out your post, TheCreamFilling. I don't remember seeing that one but basically it was getting at the same thing. Good post man.
Also, I've never heard the term "Nitzonot". That's pretty interesting. Anyway, it's cool that other people, no matter how different their tastes may be, see eye to eye with me on this.

Dark psy is cool, it just sucks that a lot of dark psy has that full-on sound

Producers are not thinking too far outside the box here

And WTF you're not a Satan worshipper for liking dark psy! LOL!

You're only a Satan worshipper if you listen to Marilyn Manson. That man is evil!

No wait...

You're only a Satan worshipper when you like bands like Slayer. That band turns people into violent killers!

No! You're REALLY a Satan worshipper if you like the punk music. Mohawks... ripped clothing... what's this world coming to?

No, I was wrong, you're REALLY REALLY a Satan worshipper if you listen to Black Sabbath. Their songs are blasphemy! About sorcery and demons! And that Ozzy guy bit the head of a bat!! If that isn't the sign of the antichrist, I don't know what is!

No.... wait... I got it for sure now. The REAL antichrist was The Beatles. They controlled the kids with their music like it was mind-control! They had everyone under their spell!

Ooops... Did I say the Beatles? I meant Jerry Lee Lewis. Great Balls of Fire my ass! That man had the devil in him, plain and simple!

Do people EVER get tired of calling people who like certain music "Devil Worshippers"? What a retarded concept. Ignore these people, let them become extinct, and smack them in the face when necessary.

Couldn't have said that better. Bravo Empty Space!!           "Subconscious unravels at the point of death, and all time it has known erupts into a moment. As death extinguishes us, so we become it."

I don't think is evil...let's quote DR.Mez to give you an idea of what I think about it.

Let's start by trashing dark psy. I know that people like it because it's "powerful" and "driving" and "harsh" and wait... just slow down, listen to it again, and what do you have? A bunch of random screeches and effects that sound like they were made by a four-year-old with not too much talent - along with a bassdrum and bassline - and with killer (I hope that you imagined the loads of sheer vileness aimed towards the word in the pronounciation of it when imagined by myself just now).

Evil???
