The point of channels is the same as in Battery.. (if you've ever used that)
If you apply an insert effect to one of the midi tracks.. it will affect ALL the 16 sounds coming out of the virus because they are all on the same channel, regardless of which midi track is triggering the notes.
With VTI 1 & 2 (and now 3) you can choose which channel you want sounds to leave the Virus on, and apply different inserts, eq, effects etc. to upto 3 different independent channels.
These are actually stereo outputs, so you could have 6 individual mono channels if you wanted.
To assign the sound an output:
In the Common tab on Virus control change 'Main Out' to
USB 1, 2 or 3 L+R (for stereo)
or
USB 1, 2 or 3 L - or - R (for mono)
If you've got a soundcard with free inputs, you can change the main out to
OUT 1, 2 or 3 L+R (for stereo)
or
OUT 1, 2 or 3 L - or - R (for mono)
and route the physical outs on the back of the Virus into your soundcard.
In Cubase to make sure the channel you just assigned to a sound is linked with the midi track you're using to trigger it:
Make a track with the Virus VST as normal, just above where you add insert fx to the VST (below instrument name) change Output 'VTI1' to whatever your sound was assigned.
If you've got a mono channel, pan it, then route into a group to get panning back.

Nope, not on the Ti at least. I guess USB is the limiting factor here. There is no more bandwidth to fit in additional channels, perhaps it's to do with processing power too.
A hell of a lot of serious jiggery must have gone into getting that new 3rd channel in.
If you use mono channels you can get 12 seperate channels, which isn't bad!
USB 3 should be out later this year, opening the door to a whole host of new amazing toys. I heard it was designed with HDTV in mind.. but no doubt loads and loads of audio could fit down the cable too |
