always been hardware since day one but as the years gone i've loaded on some plugins which i find myself using more and more is this just technology taken its course or am i going soft hehe... any other hardware freaks finding themselves in the same situation speak up haha
mainly due to everything being able to be recall in a snap, no turning on shit ,recording
midi and then having to record it to audio dam talk about hassles and work flow slow-downs.
I still love all my hardware stuff but lots of it can be created on vsts with the exceptions of my neuron which is capable of mayhem not reproduceable by vst's at the moment so i still use my hardware but just not as much as i use to! |

I just bought a virus kb and found out I prefer vsti's instead. Modern vsti's these days are that good that it seems I can go deeper with them. I get more interesting results tweaking vsti's (in combination with other software) for an hour than tweaking my virus for an hour.
If you look at vsti's like massive, zebra2, rapture... very hard for me to come close to this kind of complexity, speed of working and intuitivity on hardware . On hardware it still seems easier to make simple sounds sound more fat, with more body than on vsti's though.

digital hardware or software it s close, hardware may still sound better but it ll not make a big difference in a psy trance track imo,85% of a well produced track is the skill of the engineer , the studio acoustic and monitors, the other 15% might be the gear used. |

hardware is simply software in box other than your computer. Unless you're talking about minimoogs or doepfers or sh-101s or other rarities |

I deserted hardware years ago (1999 when I got a Pulsar to be precise).
For me workflow is the most important consideration and even if I held on to some hardware that i really like I just don't bother to plug it in since it IMO adds very little in terms of sound but get in the way of workflow in a very obvious way.

Well not to sound like a purist but only a jp8000 can give u that supersaw and it's software right? the point is yeh it's software but it's construction will define its sound (meaning the quality of parts) regardless somehow Hope u all understood that. also virtual synths have they're own character one synth i love and think it sounds really analog is oddity but not many people mention it when i play with that vst it really sounds to me ANALOG, better than the arturia's!
I like the Evolver! its this radikal analog digital hybrid!#$%@ the wavetables on that sucker are sick
i really like it for psybasslines, i like to remove the analog signal and just use the wavetable hehe sounds more define to me! It's also an great efx processor to crush the shit out of your audio like to the extreme nasty in a nice cool round way, beautiful ain't it!
Now that you can't get from a plugin so mr dave smith evolver stayed, if i was to get rid of a synth it probably be my micron, mc505, emu rob papen expansion card, erh an my infamous esi1200 haha
yeh practicly the shit that don't get used regularly!
i can make some cash to invest in my room's acoustics?

If hardware and software were truly equal then Discovery would sound EXACTLY like a Nord Lead by now after so many years of DSP R+D and new versions. Despite being able to import Nord Lead presets it doesn't have the depth or bite of the hardware.
Dedicated DSP will always be at an advantage as you won't need to use 70% of your computer's CPU power to generate a 10-note chord, like Massive does. VSTi designers will always have to trade quality for efficiency in some way as a DAW has so many other things to do than just generate a single synth sound.

Colin - on a quadcore massive uses only 14% - 25% for the most complex patch with 10 notes simultaneously. and thats on one core, so add 3 more patches and u still got the same cpu utilisation. |

Well a quad core costs much much less than a Virus or Nord

I will buy hardware soon simply for the fact that I am sick of twisting knobs with a mouse..midicontroller is nice but I want the instant gratification of ripping my face open with an analog synth.. |

i love my nord and my korg and use them alot
i wish i had more synths and then inputs as well lol
the sound of microkorg bass sounds like hardy next to laurel if you know what i meen , this vst's need some more to eat before they get FAT.
beside , the sound just fit better with the hardware , its hard to put it into words but no need for long chains of plugins to make it fit , the source is allready pritty much there.
but then again , cpu today is way way better , and gonna be so much better sooon.. they easy can handle alot. i almost cant max out in normal work my dual core.. www.sattelbattle.com

it's like playing an instrument... rather than programming |

Colin I dont think discovery is an emulation of a nord. I think its just a recreation. Listen to the clavia g2 modular demo to be convinced. Its so awesome OMG. |
