haven't seen much actual mixing/mastering advice here, but firstly you must have decent monitors, otherwise you're screwed.

Then you will want to try some eq to remove below 30hz and other ranges that are too hot, then boost some freq areas (10-12khz perhaps) to prime the sound. Some multiband compression, maybe some reverb/warming and more multiband compression perhaps and then usually limiting is necessary to bring up the final level. a frequency analyser will help you to do this.

The important thing is to use your ears and see what it needs at each stage. See:

Das Fung: There are no rules - some acts break every single mixdown rule and still make a wicked and fat mixdown (not in the psytrance scene though).           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

I Think everybody has their own vision when it comes to quality and how it should sound! It´s very individual, and that is what makes music so special! so wtf make your own style and if that is by getting commercial influences thats great, as long as you dig it!

But remember, if you have something different that you think sounds good, dont hesitate to share it! all man is different and who know we might share a tribal gen that makes us like a special thing, rhythm or what ever

anyway(1)
I think
psytrance differ so much! it can be anything! if you talk about quality,- it´s mostly about hearing all the sounds in the mix and having something solid and filling! and the struction varys alot, but when a tune is as long as a psytrance tune use to be, you cant go wrong with some short breaks and nice interesting moving and changing sounds..hehe not quite that easy eyy!

all i want to say is that their is
no need to preach about monitors, just mix and gain experience of sound and sound-design. and when you get money or your fat ass to the music store to buy a pair! be a happy bloke or girl and work harder! and never trust one speaker! sound is deceiving, haha!

anyway(2)
Im with kaz 100%

after some years you will have something you grown with and probably have put all your soul in! also you will have your experience!

have no hurry!

im not saying that its bad with pointers and sharing experience and ideas, but you can never hurry art to perfection, Perfect is just a word, with a very odd meaning! an utopia meaning

so i ask you, can music be perfect?

Sorry for long post, im stoned and talkative.. lol

sure you have to learn your monitors, pros and cons. you can also get by with hifi speakers. but getting a decent set of monitors, so I could hear what was going on with each sound changed the level of my tunes dramatically. when I listened to my older stuff I thought wtf, no wonder the mix was so bad on other systems (low freq too strong/whatever drowning the sound). If your doing the music just for fun then fine, no great need for decent monitors.

How do you know it ? Do you count yourself as such act or some act that sound good gave you review about their masterings .

No i think i know how you know that ! you hear it in the mix !

You said there is no rules in proper mix !

There are read Bob Katz or maybe other author with who you will not argue like with me because he know much more than you do.

Also i realy want to hear your music , you sound very proffecional by talk .

First of all, with all due respect to Bob Katz, Aphex Twin bluntly ignores all the rules for a proper mixdown and created some of the most original music ever - his entire "I Care Because You Do..." album basically ignores all the standard mixdown rules, waits until they're not looking and then repeatedly stabs them in the back with a 20inch blade, yet is an electronic masterpiece for the criminally insane.

My mixdowns aren't nearly on that level (no monitors or even quality headphones here) - but that's beside the point. Listen to tracks by the elite of the techno and IDM scenes and you will find out that the best mixdowns don't think inside the box at all, and even more so, sometimes when you do something totally wrong in the mix it gives the track a lot more power and depth (adding harsh feedbacks in a single frequency, once in a while boosting the bass by 3db, etc) - just as a minimalist knows that headroom is there to be used, some people think headroom is there to be twisted. Again, this is not true of the psytrance scene, and that's why 99% of the full-on tracks today sound like they came from the same studio.
