Hi,

I believe the instrument you are referring to is the sitar. I would say the two most well known indian instruments are the sitar (stringed instrument) and tablas (hand drums).

As far as classical indian music and playing the sitar, Ravi Shankar is the master.

Sona Rupa Records has several good releases of indian music.

Prem Joshua is very good in the realm of producing traditional style indian music using a combination of traditional instruments along with some synthesizers and effects. I think his best release is Sky Kisses Earth.

A few great releases that I would say are more modern production but include indian instrumentation and feel are: Kumba Mela Experiment - East of the River Ganges, Ekko - Centripetal, Adham Shaikh - Essence, Adham Shaikh - Fusion, Talvin Singh - OK, Future Sound of London - The Isness, and some of Angel Tears' music.          ****keep the peace****

DJ Cheb I Sabbah is right up the same alley. he has a few cds out, some are almost totally pristine unremixed indian classical music, but a few others have more of an electronic/dubby touch.

I would have to say Badmarsh & Shri's "Dancing Drums" cannot be overlooked, although it's heavier on the tabla tip than the sitar. Still, some of the best fusion-style music of this kind I've come across.

Ditto MIDIval PunditZ.

also Karsh Kale. Especially his second album, Liberation. But both are good.
