Some questions about gating

I ask about the type of technique whereby an effect is somehow gated to control the attack or decay portion of the sound.

For example, a clap that is dry immediately after the audio hit for say 100ms, and then a sudden wash of reverb following. This is something I hear in XI recent album (Night Shift rmx) to name one.

Or how about the reverb (or other effect) has a very fast decay phase (say for example snare drum that you don't want to create to much of a wash otherwise it will muddy up the following snare hit).

In SX3, (or other PC compatible hosts and plug-ins) do you have a favorite insert or combination for achieving this? How about plug ins? Can it be done with battery2 alone? Is it just a matter of automation and send levels?

Cheers.

and the second effect your describing is a reverb with a short reverb tail.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

hi pypedream, try out this, it's free and ok! you can download the plugin directly from the page. interesting is the predelay parameter (for your first asked effect), and the second is of course also possible, just play a bit with it. if you want a really cool type of your first asked effect, bounce the effect signal and put it after your audio event. have fun!

another way of gating is often used while creating beats. you might have a banging beat with heavy cymbals or claps, some reverb on it and you want to have dynamics in the beats, more space between the hits. there you choose a gate.

There is a free gate from destroyfx. (http://destroyfx.smartelectronix.com/)

this free gate works with help of a second midi channel, routed to the gate effect. From note-start to -end it will play the source signal, on notestop it will mute the signal with a chosen release value. Very interesting for stoping long reverbtails etc and cleaning up busy rhytms or just about anything you throw at it.

the one in the wavesbundle is very useful too.

you can find different gate effects, the ones I know of are:

-notecontrolled gates (destroy fx, cubase native gate, waves c1 gate edition, lots of others)

[set noisefloor, attack, release and trigger the gate with a note on/note off]

-patterngates (camelspace, mgtriggergate)

Another way is to use sidechaincompression with help of a triggersignal for such details, but this is far more complicated and often not as useful as a gate. I'm sure you can find lots of infos about this topic in the search.

hope it helps abit, you got to experiment yourself now.           soundcloud.com/epsylohm

Many reverbs (Waves RVerb, Roomworks I think, Reason RV7000 and many others) are capable of making gated reverb straight out of the box.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
