Hello all, i'd like your kind assistance on a couple of matter:
1. I record Virus using Layla24. The volume level of the recorded audio is lower than the volume level of the original sound (i can hear the original by plugging headphones directly to the Virus). Is this O.K? I'd like to know:
A. Is the Virus output signal considered professional (+4dBu) or consumer (-10dBV)? Mixers have +4dBu signal, but do synths such as the Virus, which are undoubtedly professional equipment, have a +4dBu output signal? I need to know this in order to modify correctly the signal input buttons in the Layla virtual mixing console.
B. Is the Layla24 (controlled by Cubase) a good solution for mixing? It contains all the ins and outs i need, but does it lack vital features that dedicated mixers have? Have I made a terrible mistake in not purchasing mixer + sound card with a single stereo in?
C. If the Layla is a good solution for mixing, does the answer to the volume level lay in cubase? All the meters in the VST mixer are reset and ASIO direct monitoring is off. So what can I do (besides normalizing the volume level for every audio file recorded)?
2. How do I perform a total dump from the Virus into Cubase (in order to save all the presets)?
3. Is win 98 SE still the best OS for music creation?
Many thanks in advance :) Tom |

1. A. Take a flashlight and point it inside the input. Look inside, if you see just a hole then it's -10. If you see a chupchik, then it's +4. If you don't know how the chupchik looks like, look inside the layla or inside the headphones output of the synth. I figured it out after reading the manual for my Delta about 20 times, +4 is for balanced connections (TRS - Tip Ring Sleeve) and -10 is for unbalanced (TS - Tip Sleeve). The ring is for the chupchik. (But I'm still not sure, fix me if I'm wrong)
3. I have used both Win98SE and WinME, and I must say that ME is far better than 98SE. I know most of you don't like ME, but it works PERFECT for me. |

Tom, when you record the synth with layla, it goes something like this:
synth-breakoutbox-pcicard-harddisk. u have level controls in: synth, layla console and recording software(soundforge/wavelab/cubase/logic/whatever) mixer. there should also be ASIO mixer with recording level handle.
check that all the volumes and levels fit in all these and i think the level will be the same on headphones and the card.

PsyTom, 2. about the dump, it's simple, and it's in the manual file, read page 174, all types of MIDI dumps, if you use OS v.4 (inspite i don't remember which Virus u use, i assume - B or KB) 1.B. about goodness of Layla etc. : i can't look objectively on the product whose manufacturer refused to release details about their card in order people could write linux driver for it ... so i won't come near Echo. but many people are very content with Laylas. i don't remember now, but there's a few comparison charts for audio interfaces i have in my bookmarks, but i'm not on my box now, if u need them - p.m. me. 3. the best OS for audio has yet been discovered. in 1-2 years it won't be win98se. reason: audio needs multi-tasking and harsh real-time. both of these features lack quality in all win. but for now most of the soft is written for win32, or Mac OS > Os 8.5. i think XP is stable enough (according to many people) for audio [multi tasking enough], but i still haven't checked how realtime it is...

Thanks everyone. :)
1. A. The Virus' output are balanced indeed, they have a chupchik :)
2. When asking on dump performing, I meant what operations in CUBASE do I need to performe in order to recieve the dump from the Virus.
Haven't checked the volume level issue yet, will do it soon.
10x again Tom |

about cubase ... press record :) [don't forget to disable sysex filtering on input]
the best is to create a new midi track and then save it as midi track for the future. |
