Auster is fn great; check out anything by him; not so much for chilling though imo. Could be weighty sometimes.
A lot of the short stories by Pelevin can be for great for chilling to some Omnimotion. The novels are worthwhile, but some of those short stories are essential.
I am not sure if anyone has suggested Pynchon here, but The Crying Lot of 49 (or another number maybe), Gravity's Rainbow or anything else by this master of psychological fiction is a must.

This is a fab way to spend a couple of hours for sure, haven't cast eyes on this for years!!! "Everything in this book could be wrong....." - priceless.
Good choices across the thread in fact - particularly with respect to Hesse, Huxley, Arthur C. Clarke.....
Also (in no particular order) The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene - unfold into 11 dimensions.
The World Inside by Robert Silverberg - it's a bit dark this one but an easy read so A* if you're chilling out.
The Manual (How to Have a Number One The Easy Way) by The Timelords - very funny.
The 13 1/2 lives of Captain Bluebear - also very funny and quite trippy if you ask me!! Brings out the child in you and really great illustrations.
Gray's Anatomy.
Sci-fi short story collections are excellent chill out material.
I also recommend reading cookery books when you're stoned because you end up on some fab munchie missions......!!!

Good thread I must say, books are definitly the ultimate mind expanders. as I can see some of my favorites books here were mentioned already, so i'll add some of my own :
- Blade Runner by Phillip K. Dick (hilarious and brilliant science fiction)
- the Amber series by Roger Zelazny (one of the, if not the best Fantasy books I ever read)
- also Doorways in the Sand by Roger Zelazny (crazy and very special science fiction)
- Mr. Vertigo and The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster (both great stories, and good writing)
- The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth (amazing and brilliant thriller, no boring moments and highly thrilling) |
