Well first off The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galazy, A Trilogy In Five Parts
I guess many have heard of it, but there are always some who haven't. In the beginning Earth is demolished and that's when the story really starts.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0345453743/ref=pd_sim_books_2/103-5682903-8803824?v=glance&s=books

The other Douglas Adams books are just great aswell. Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul are about Dirk Gently (suprise!) who has a detective agency (suprise!). Only expect to find lots of old Gods and well, don't even ask in these books..
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0517119129/qid=1095702686/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/103-5682903-8803824?v=glance&s=books

Douglas Adams also wrote Last Chance To See. It's not Science Fiction or Fantasy, nevertheless atleast I enjoy it enourmosly. It's about Douglas and a zoologist called Mark going around the world looking for endangered species..
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0345371984/qid=1095702941/sr=ka-1/ref=pd_ka_1/103-5682903-8803824

That's pretty much everything Douglas ever wrote for he died quite young. But there's also a book called Starship Titanic which was Douglas' idea but was actually written by a monty python, Terry Jones.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0345368436/qid=1095703042/sr=ka-1/ref=pd_ka_1/103-5682903-8803824

Now that you've read all these you're most likely dying to get your hands on something even remotely as good.

The first book you should go for is called Good Omens from Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. It's about Armageddon. And how an angel and a demon who're very much alike actually try to fuck it up for they quite like living on earth.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0441003257/qid=1095703129/sr=ka-1/ref=pd_ka_1/103-5682903-8803824

I've also read Gaiman's American Gods which is about old gods living in America. Only now the storm is coming, a war between new and old gods.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0380789035/qid=1095703232/sr=ka-1/ref=pd_ka_1/103-5682903-8803824

At the moment I'm reading Terry Pratchett's Discworld series which atleast this far seems fucking brilliant.

..

If you want something a bit more "real" check out some Hunter S Thompson books like

*Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas
*Rum Diary
*Hell's Angels

..All very good           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

The Hobbit, I recall was okay, although it was years ago that I read the book. LOTR however was in my opinion so, so boring that I read the first 200 pages or so and just gave up..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

at the moment i'm reading

musashis's "a book of five rings"
and e.t.a. hoffmann's "der goldne topf"

the first is about the way of the sword
(of the samurai) that is controlled by
the 5 elements (earth, water, fire, wind
and nothingness). the goal is to understand
these elements and to use the information
in everyday life (but for the samurai especially on the battel field)

the second is a fantastic fairytale with
alchemy, witches etc... all the good stuff
written in the romantic era by a german
writer/judge/musician.

oh yes, and for mind boggling chillin' :

raymond smullyan:
lady or the tiger? and other logic puzzles

very funny and sometimes veeery frustrating.

Now we have a topic here that it could be endless...

Recent one that I read and enjoyed for chilling reasons (since this is the topic) was
TROPIC OF CANCER by Henry Miller

Btw I've just started to read
PHILOSOPHY IN THE BOUDOIR by Marquis de Sade(or in the Bedroom, it depends on the translation).
This's really brilliant for those who want to chill and are in a naughty mood
