Both are superb DAWs and you'll be fine with either, its more a matter of personal taste.
If you're just starting out I'd recommend Live since its cheaper and definitely a bit more user-friendly and has a better learning curve.
Saying that though, once I learned Cubase I never looked at another sequencer again |

Salvia,
your question really makes sense...although both of them can be used to produce music they definitely have some discrete applications that can make the jobs easier.
Not to go very deep in the discussion here s my examples so that you can decide for yourself:
1 – if your main focus is to produce music, I d tell you that Cubase is the best choice.
2 – If you re going to produce tracks but you also really need to focus on playing the produced tracks live at stage
Cubase is a great daw to write, edit and produce the tracks via midi editor.
Live can do the production job as well with some nice features, but the writing and editing process is that pleasure…like Cubase. But when it goes to playing live at stage, Ableton Live is a dream that comes true, a thousand times better than Cubase. As you see is not ta question of who s better, but for which purpose will you use it.
Of course that a lot of people have different opinions, once personal taste flows like planes in the sky….but if you follow the basics of my concepts you d have the tool to take the best decision.

Hey, thanks for the advice. I decided on getting cubase 1st. That way I have more time to learn it before having to learn Live. |

BTW, maybe you can buy it cheaper via eBay.
(if somebody gets it as birthday present, and wants to make some money out of it)
just make sure you get the dongle etc.

I had tried both Cubase sx3 & Live 6, can anyone tell me whats the advantage of Cubase over Live? im new so i dont know.
It has better 'tools' inside? (like de drum midi pattern editor?
For example i found that the EQ tools on Cubase ar much better than the Live's one, if we are talking about this i can use vsts on Live to EQ (it was only an example).
I want that someone remark me the advatages of Cubase over Live that CANT be solved by using vsts on Live.
Because to be honest im just fine on Live, i didnt find anything that make myselft turn into Cubase again, for me as a begginer its too big, Live its much more intuitive.
I hope i made myself clear... ^^
