Hi im planning on doing a minimal ambient track with just some few sounds.
How can i make a monoton track where you still hear that it changes?
What is the best way to do it?

synth automations e.g filter
in techno/minimal/tech house etc. the reverb and delays also have massive automation to create tension and change
and more change on the percussions during the track

these styles tend to be more monotonous so your sound design and choice must really fit together to create one whole picture that really sits straight which people like to listen more often without getting bored to quickly, if something sounds nice you can play it 16 bars with minor changes and its ok

also a nice beat/groove is essential

these are just some beats, but man I learnd alot, I never thought about something like ghost hi hats/snare etc. and they really make it

Sparse bassline, very clean and very phat kick. As few elements as possible           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

Great i will make som automation on the delay and reverb and see where i end up ( i really like those atmospheric sounds)
when you say groove , how do you create this after programming a straight kick and bass is it by quantizing?
Nice links by the way!

Find 1 sound that can sound like 15 other sounds by a flip of a switch and still resemble the original sound.

Sometimes you don't need another element, you just need better dynamics on the elements you've already acquired.

Less is always more.

Your tips was awesome, for the first time in my life i finally have a minimal atmospheric proggy tune going. It has a deep kick and bass and the drums is from a more acoustic drumkit which gives a more jazzy organic feel. And i have a non melodic house pad in the background which i have automated. Now i understand less is more!
Where should i go from now, i have a quite long loop, how can i give the listener a feel that something is changing within the song. I tried adding a melodi but the hypnotic feel of the song just disapeared. So i want some variation in the drum timbre but i don´t really now how to do this.

if you go for the timbre of your drums slap a phaser on them or some of them, or give a search here for shponglizing drum loops

for the melody, try slow melody with the same pad - overdub it so original pad still goes on, but additional layer of the same pad (octave higher maybe) appears.

Slap a filter on the drum loop, play with reverb/delay sends, cut/shuffle the loop!
