do any of you experienced mac users have any recommendations for any decent, FREE, anti-virus software for macs. Software that can detect and then hopefully eliminate any virus's. Even some reccomendations for some websites would be good. Ive done some searches but just been a little drowned with huge lists of different ones that are supposedly good. Contrary to the belief that there are no viruses for macs or very few . . . . there are plenty!! I strongly suspect i have one - nothing major but a right pain in the ass. Serves me right for being a little brazen about not worring about viruses. on the other hand it could be that my external hard drives a little dodgy but im pretty sure thats not the case. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks guys. If your a virus expert and you want to know why i think i have a virus please just say id be happy to explain. |

Most people would advise u against using an antivirus on ur mac because it slows down ur performance of ur machine...
Most mac review sites etc reccomend u dont use norton (i think they stopped making the mac antivirus now) or equivallent because 95% of virus's are written for pc..
I have used my powerbook for 4 years now and have never experienced a virus... including the 2 when i had norton enabled on my machine!!.
Hope that helps
raoul
PS>> Backup regularly if ur not gonna be running an antivirus |

I used clamaXav and it worked a treat - found three viruses and so my system seems to be working fully again!
no worries icodon my tone of post didn't really reflect my real tone (which was not unfriendly)
clamaXav is fine for the occassional scan every now and again when you think you have a problem so i won't be using it for a while now. Nevertheless its useful to have i think

it's not entirely pointless... he's right as to the usefullness of antivirus on mac, there are hardly any viruses on mac, so virtually no need for protection... Virusses are created to multiply, so you make them for a system that exists a lot... mac doesn't exist a lot, so why write virusses for it? Linux/unix has a little more virusses because most webservers are linux/unix, but in fact only windows users really have problems with virusses. |
