SOLAR FIELDS “Blue Moon Station” (Ultimae Records)
Talented sound designer Magnus Birgersson from Sweden has landed on planet earth to deliver his second masterpiece, “Blue Moon Station”, and in my view he has definitely found his own voice amongst other ambient artists (if “Reflective Frequencies”, his first album, wasn’t enough!!!) because his creativity, his vision and the recording techniques used, to create a very spacious and crystal clear sound. What particularly struck me about “Blue Moon Station” is the way Magnus has so skilfully combined layer upon layer of sound with drones, epic melange of floating yet industrial beats, strange sample and effects, shimmering spacey synthesizers and hi-tech tribal grooves. There is a recurring, thunder-like sound that is oddly appealing, and it creates a sense of calm before the storm, from futuristic humming sounds swelling up and down into a sea of bubbly electro dub (track 9, my favourite!!!), all perfectly judged and executed, dynamic and always changing. Welcome to the future.
