as music generally gets heavier and higher impact across the genres of psytrance (agree or no? i think more and more percussion and kick impact in the mix- more slamming breaks and jarring stops etc..)
basically- with this kind of thinking, the most slamming aggressive sound wins everytime, what is the balance between music and skeletal impact that makes a dancefloor experience pleasant and enjoyable? |

depends on your state of mind at a specific time at a party
there is no "formula" nor balance (imo) needed in order to enjoy a track... sometimes you want it to flow peacefully and carry you gently through the experience (for me - afternoon times at a party with proggy tunes), sometimes you want a melody that will make you cry in joy (usually sunrise for me - but it can be anytime at a party ), and sometimes you want the bass to pound hard and break every bone of your body
this is why diversity is so important in a lineup of a good party in my opinion |

imo this is the mixing aspect of each artist/producer, soft or hard
soft/smoother mixes tend to sound more "fast" to my ear with less gravity and hard more static and a bit more techno and with more gravity to "push" you on the ground

to be in phase, to recycle and change and each sound to have a nice tail and glue to the mix and of course the mix to have a defined meta center
no matter style, taste etc

Something about the Ocelot kick is annoying to me and I have a hard time listening, let alone dancing to it. Is it the shape?
Can we talk about that? |

I like my psytrance to be hard, fast, gritty and aggressive.
I like my drum and bass to be soft, crisp, clean.
That's so weird.

I liked that. A lot.
Personally I tend to enjoy more my trance softer and less sharp and aggressive in sound. But there's the right moment for everything in a party, and there I try to keep an open mind.

yes its the shape. its totally ok to talk about it. there are different ocelot kicks but i would need to know what kick you don't like. (name a track)
there is perhaps a bit too much of the midrange as it goes down in frequency. its perfectly tuned usually to the note of the bassline and is usually a bit too long compared to most other producers so the ringing note tail of the kick is present under the first note of the bassline and sometimes the second.
i am trying to reform my kicks
i just remixed a penta track and also i saw some other peoples kicks and i was noticing the shape... shape is eq in this case as a kick basically sweeps down from up high to down low- very quickly...
so tell me
mind you- its the first time in my life i would speak about this subject. i have prided myself on my kicks and detested others kicks for over 15 years...
only now can i see how the midrange might be a bit much. |
