presets can be good starting point , if i was making mainstream / commercial music i would browse presets and use them a lot as there is lot of good ones .but not really for psychedelic music.
also for having own sound it help, for example having some great patchs you re the only one to use.when people hear them they reconize your sound, it s probably harder when using loads of presets

Guys, i am reversed on this topic

I do use preset, a lot, what's so wrong with it?

Let's say u have a brand new vst, what u do? start from sine waves and have immediatly your blasting divine sounds?

Me personally i take the time to explore all patches, all waveforms all additional banks,

many and many times i came over a preset, select it and say
"ooohh waddafuckineverfuckingfuck this tiny instrument can do???"

"i was fuckin around with saw waves and l do not ever know that this synth can do this sound"

Let's take the good old crystal for instance, some preset are very well structured, if it wasn't for presets i would have ditched it a long time ago.

Plus, on commercial vsts the presets are made from in house designers or guest sound designers who
certainly know waay up than me how to desogn a particular sound (let's think about manuel schleiss from vengeanc) or they have made the vst their own, whitch, for me is cause of trust

There is nothing worng with using presets. NOTHING. I make some sounds from scratch, and use presets aswell.

On the other hand, it is a good tip to learn to make your sounds form Init patch, but that doesn´t mean using presets is wrong.

I like saving my home made presets. It really is my most important folder in my computer, BY FAR. It's like my signature. And lots of times, I grab my presets, tweak them more, add more modulation/effects and make a new version. These new versions end up being the evolution of my sound too time.

All of my patches start either from an init patch or a patch I made before.

Also, I like to have a pretty extensive collection because I don't like to tweak too much into sound designing while writting (takes away the flow you might be having).

EDIT: Ahah, and I gotta confess, I do use presets from other people from time to time. Arround 10% of the presets I use are modified versions of synths initial presets, the rest is all mine. It's mostly for FX and other non-signature stuff.
