So I randomly deleted my presets

Random topic I guess. I got to thinking today that I end up browsing presets too much. None of them ever seem to be more inspiring than listening to a good track, so I backed up to somewhere remote, and deleted all my presets.

My hope is it will force me to rely on my knowledge a bit more.

I suppose reverse engineering presets is sometimes useful, but I never seem to retain much just from reversing some random preset since I got at least the basics down.

I have nothing but init patches and a save button for new things I create at the moment.

Am I just crazy, or does anyone else do this too?

yes me too. Just not all synths so far but its just lazyness. But I dont use any else prestes than mine, only on the first few days as I can remember that I really used other presets.I think this is good for your computer space.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

Nice I like it.. you challenged yourself big-time its a good idea (for the lazy ones) but still some presets are very useful for put ideas fast.

Great idea! Ohh man you're going to have so much fun It's a little steep and hard in the beginning, but with time it becomes way faster, boosts your tracks and releases your creativity.

Thumbs up!           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

Nice one, man! This is a way to go. I did something similar when was starting the debut album of Algae Bloom. I planned to use heavily my Blofeld there, to get its specific color through all of the tracks, so I deleted all of its presets from its sound banks and concentrated on tweaking everything from scratch. Basically I do tweak everything from init patches but I wanted to make it really radical

Now the album is almost ready, at least the sounds are done, mix and master left. Several days ago I've sold my Blofeld with all the the presets I've made there There were about 100 sounds I tweaked for the album.

What really inspires me is Omnisphere. With that many sound sources it offers there is no need in presets whatsoever.

Gratz on you training your Synth skills more

I also think thats the best way...I never save my sounds to presets, so I have to to them from scratch too every time...           My first track:

never save your sounds???

its one thing to delete presets - but you gotta save your sounds man!

Those little moments of inspiration that lead you down a particular path are hard to get back to and are incredibly easy to capture!

I love having a nice folder of presets all made by me that I can play and add and tweak whenever I want - I would feel very lost without it            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

It's kind of rare that I save my patches either... My philosophy is that I made it the last time, if I ever need to make it again I can, but it will be different the next time. Now this being said, I tend to keep the instrument that made the sound in the project after it's been rendered just in case there's a mixing error or something that I need to fix for that individual song, but more often than not I only save about 10% of the patches I create.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

i really regret i didnt saved some sounds i will never get close again ,specially on aalto modular synth as it s not typical and almost impossible to recreate 2 times the same complex patch for me.

but for more comon synthesis and psy sounds i like more to make them from scratch usualy as it s part of the inspiration for me when making music.
the funny thing it s sometimes i only make crap patchs when there is no inspiration,so it s really a artisical part of making music for me.
except if i use typical leads but that also mean i don t have much inspiration

imo don't even make music for some times or less ... concentrate on the art of synthesis ,it s the most powefull knowledge for making more intresting psytrance or music that rely on experimental synth sounds.

check some synthesis books/tutorial to get new ideas

i never use presets but I dindnt go all out and erase them all.....sometimes when Im lacking inspiration I will look at presets and see what they did....and you really learn alot about how the synth is used to create a certain sound.....then when I am insprired I will then go and use what I learned....its a really good way to know how your synth really works and little twitches that you might not be aware of that really do make a diference when creating a sound... so it all helps really reverse engineering...but if you dont know anything about synthesis then a blank page is the best place to start

i also never save. it used to save the patches i created in the projects inside the vsts but now usin only synths i never save. tend to quick record everything in audio and if needs a sound again i just try to redesign it , best training for creatin sounds.
