... and spent way too long to find one in the range I was looking for.

I then realized I'd amassed over a thousand kick drum samples. Largely garbage.

Spent the next hour or so going through and deleting about 85% of the kicks, hats, and other undesirable percs that I never would have used in a million years. Man that feels good.

What feels even better is synthing your own kick drum and having it be better than anything in your sample library            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

You never know when a garbage kick drum will be the most important component for your tripple 5 layerd ultra kick..

seriously, those kickdrums, hihats and what not can be good spice when layering. But then again its only the most dedicated engineers that takes the time to fiddle with this sort of stuff

hehe, tick tick, tick you off!

Yeah I have tons of kicks I want to delete... but it took me years to know which ones worked and why.

Then I learned to make them and stopped the sample usage... i don't layer kicks for psytrance as i find they phase in unpleasant ways, so now bazzism and ultrabeat are my source + good eq and dist i make custom kick for every track, sometimes reuse.

When i want to get something exotic i do use recorded samples or vengeance kinda kicks.

Recently I made some cool techno kicks using the mopho's triangle wave... it was inspiring.

the other day i was in mood to get some kick ready for when i find some motivation to make psytunes,i spent 1 hour and made more than 100 kicks all run into outboard and cuted perfectly , not much hassle to be safe for at least 1 full album and using the best one, big +1 for making your own kicks, only sample worht keeping for me are the ones coming from analog synths as i dont have any

i spend some times learning/experimentating drums synthesis for some work i think it really worht it and i will do the same than with the kicks for other drums, snare, crash tambourine ... everyhting can be synthetized with great result in psytrance as the drums dont need much work and are not very complex.

i find it not really suited when you are after a big phat sound, unless you have analog sources... for some prog for example i would use analog source and processing as i want depth and huge sound wihtout hassle, but for psy and full on any softsynths will make some great drums,it s less minimal style of music, you dont need the phatest drums that are easier to archieve using analog or sample

own kick brings a special, even unique feeling to a track

dunno if it s just me,i find in full on all good kick sound almost the same, one would have to make a crapy sounding kick to be original, as makings a kick that dont need much eq if any at all ,i always end up with the same type of kick

Play around with Bazzism, be sure to tweak the envelope (This is very important am I right?)

the only occasion when i'll not synthesize my own kicks is when i use a 909. i've found ace and bazzism good. i have yet to try ultrabeat...

I wouldn't agree Mr. PoM, I think in kickcraft a couple milliseconds make the difference. Yeah well, a balanced kick is pretty much the same recipe all the time but I think envelopes (pitch/amp), eq and compression can give a kick much character and uniqueness. I always make similar kicks too but they differ and have different "colors" hehe...

Lately I've been developing a taste for quite phasey plastic sounding kicks - mainly because they do have a lot of character!

Soooo bored of full on kicks. Honestly, I've reached the point where if someone listens to my stuff, and says it sounds odd then I almost take it as a compliment.

Had enough of this identikit sounding shit!

I've done 'that' full on kick to the point where I no longer want to hear it -ever- again.

So, I make kicks now that do what a kick should, but I actually want it to sound like two kicks on a big rig a big plastic schmak on top as the same time as a good old thump. If it phases ... so what - as long as it isn't eating mix room and works with the bass ... great.
