I used search but didn't find any answers...

How can you get a snare punchy? Nowadays I experience more problems with snares than with bass. What samples or VSTi's do you use? And what effects? Even with about 5-8 effects I can't get it right. And when it sounds about right, it's too loud, it clips. Is it normal that you have to layer about 3 snaresamples to get a bit of a decent result?

very frustrating...

Compressor, EQ, Reverb. The first obvious thing is to pick a good sample. The problem with making the snare punchy is that most snares are NOT made for psytrance music and their punch is usually in bass frequencies (a big mixdown no-no if you want it to play with the bassdrum).

A compressor with a 15ms attack and 15ms release will give the snare a very controlled volume, the volume can be made more or less steady excluding the part which was left at a higher volume due to the attack. EQ out all freqs under 200Hz (despite the temptation, the bass from the bassdrum and bassline should be enough, the snare will just clash with them), and then just tweak as necessary until the snare sits very well in the mix. Add a reverb with a short length but high density and in a big room (attenuation at 350Hz low and 5000Hz high just to keep it from too much clanging) - just fine tune it until the snare sounds as full as you want it.

Voila, most snares will sound great after this. Envelope reverbs (like Logic's internal Enverb) can also give a very good punch to snares. You can always experiment with those.

Now, if you want to really do something more complex (that is, working with 2+ drumloops), you will also have to make sure that there are no two snares that sit on the same frequency which are played at the same time (at high volumes), because that will probably create a resonance in your mixdown (which means, clipping when everything is at it's right volume).           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

thanks Kaz!

I must say, except for the exact compressor settings I did everything (eq) you said... So I guess my question now is: which samples are good for psytrance? I've tried a lot of 909 samples but it's never as punchy as I want it to be. Isn't there some good online resource of good free basic snaresamples, suitable for psytrance?

A wide variety of snares is important... best recommendation: shitloads of SampleCDs called things like "techno breaks vol 1246" or "percussion works vol 237146"... eventually you will find all the snares you need.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

Fo' real?

thanks for the tips. But I was kinda hoping for some link to some great resource of fine snaressamples which can be eq'd to fat sounding psytrance snares. Don't feel like buying techno samples 2004, actually, don't feel like buying anything...

Try to use hand claping in layers together with the snare drum , this can sound very good if you give each one of them a good Eq.

Another trick often used through out the music industry to get your snares to pop a little more is to put just a small amount of distortion on them (this can also work well with cymbals if you are careful). This tends to emulate the effects of tape distortion to some degree and brings out the snappier high ends. But don't over do it too much either, unless you are doing gabber hardcore ot something.           New Album: Jikkenteki - Flights Of Infinity

Hey limbic got to say i don't agree on this one.

IMHO The source sound is as important as the EQ and the process, like in all sounds and not only snares the source should be quality and at least something with an option to be the sound you want ,except for all kind of SFX that in their case you can make anything out of nothing.

If you got a good sound source then it will be more likely that you'll get what you want to hear , EQ is not enough.

Hi !
Im having some problem to make a trance snare
but this gives a similar sound.
I put a clap on a snare, use some kind of a highpassfilter, distortion, reverb and compress it.
How do you guys make a snare common for trance?

Best regardsConny
