take a sample from a life recording of a skilled drummer, could be better than any other sample bank.
Accoustic snares are my favourits. They have bite ..well some of them. They sound more vivid .           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

sorry, but i don't have a recording studio for that. Anyway i have live snare recordings. When i put em in the track it seems they have no presense.I barely hear them with the lead.I eq em raise somewhere around at 500hz at the snap and raise 2db to 4db high pass at 3 - 4 khz(around) and harsh cut at 11.7 khz and lowcut at 200 something. same level as kick(a bit less)send to reverb, send to delay. And what i find is that it takes alot of my spectrum. So i sidechain it with with all the lead pads group and still it is so weak in the mix.
so i tried puting kindzadza like snares that is mainly has no highs and lows just chock sound. like i've cut the snare till 1khz and somewhere at highs brutaly and gave me more presense in the track. So how do u add ur recordings?

What iterests me the most is:
"where you cut where you pass?", "levels comparing the kick?", "stereo position?", "does it fit all the time in a track or just small parts only?", "sidechaining group or track, when and how?", "if you really are taking a recording how to make it fit ur track", "Envelopes?", "Synth snare Or live recording?"... Well thats a lot ...^_^
Anything else you have to say about snares

I also have not good possibility to record at home since my room is untreated .. Im about to change that, plan is to record also instruments and vocals in a cabin or room asap.
But I have access to good studios rooms and equipment for now in another place .
I always found snares very plastic and very same in most psytrance tracks. And without bite often:D
Now I have a recipe to get me satisfied in puncto snares. That life drummings to cut the phat elements out to one shots ,I just like the sound thousand times more than any of those compressd to death sample libraries that I've heard so far.
Personaly I think I will stay at it,and use more from drummer recordings.Espescially snares.

About eqing, I would lowcut at 80 hz for sure and lowshelf and a peak up somewhere between 100-200hz and a dip somewhere between 350-500 and another small boost somewhere in the higher frequencies. But I would always try to compare the eq with other sources espescialy kick and bass .
Speakafreaka once had written a real great essay about snares somewhere here with lots of infos on eqing and copression settings for snares.. need to find it myself too.
Gated reverb could be nice to snares too.I use often micro delays from sends to snares.

..and I found and tested(I think from speakafreakas article) that gates on snares are often great for me atleast.

and saturation ,compression ,reverb...sidechain a gate, you can try layering distorted clap but cuting the first few peaks of them that sound very cheesy unless you abuse them with LOT of distortion.

or just use a sample that fit

I'm fond of layered snares actually.

Hardly ever need to EQ or compress them though, I've found that choosing the right samples in the beginning is way better than fiddling around to make it sound good.

Also the snappy snare I usually delay just a touch so it come in after the deeper snares. I just like the way it sounds

Reverb is a must though           www.soundcloud.com/za-pagan

+1 I think the biggest thing is getting a good sample to begin with. Then you don't need to tweak it forever.

oh.. also, if you're going to use a clap, sometimes you can cut out the beginning of the clap sample to take out the attack, then use a transient shaper to make it snap. something to experiment with.

SNARE + CLAP
SHORT DEEP REVERB

Some basic EQ, cut low, raise snappy shit
Sumtimes distortion to cook it a little.

I put different snares panned differently to each other. Not quite as extreme as you would in normal music, but just enough so there is some variance in their panning(compared to each other)

@ daark, you want presence, layer them up. Or even just duplicate the one you are using it and make adjustments to it.

Like we pointed out earlier, using the correct sample is rather important. But also remember that it should sound good in the mix, not by itself.

Often something will sound really cool by itself, but in the mix sounds entirely different.

I just find a good snare/clap sample and just use that. Coming from the breakbeat scene, I do tend to mix them in somewhat loud... anyhow look up for the classic "Gorillaz" snare that was used like there is no tomorrow by the likes of the Plump DJs, Meat Katie, elite Force, etc. Its the best sounding snare ever!
Other than that, good ol' 909 snare and 808 clap, works just fine.

My favorite snare sound isn't a snare at all.... It's a whip! I just love the sound it makes when breaking the speed of sound.. Now thats a great snap           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz
