New to this so posing this question out here.

I want to throw in some flams in my track, but not sure how it's best done. Do you program this or just use a sample?
Also other 'real' snare patterns. Programmed or sampled?

Thanks

without knowing what a "flam" is ...apart from your regular snare (need for trance music i think) ... quantize off + ghost notes + layer chopped loops works good , pure drummer rock things u will have tough time fixing it in trance , just draw them , change pan , velocity , automate something somewhere .. see what u like .... whats flam ?

thats some of my rookie things anyway

but anyway , snare = the main things that moves you in trance ... at knee jerk level .. seriously .. just a silly pattern suddenly comes , so cool .. everyone robot mode .. snare = important thing

ok thanks, that's what I was thinking.
Drawing and shaping some of those rudiment patterns can be pretty tedious though

But I'm a little confused why you would have quantize off for a drum pattern. Wouldn't you need this on, maybe quantize at 1/32 (or even 1/64) to keep the beat in time? (if I understand quantize correctly)

NI Battery has flam and roll options also humanize and random settings.

I still like to draw midi notes tho... variate velocity and sometimes thow in some rims along with snare hits sounds nice.

The shuffle/swing quantize must be over 30% at all times!

Thanks guys. Sample packs of snares are often of different snares. Is there a snare sample pack, or set of snare samples that contains different hits on the same snare? Just curious.

Same with hit hats. different hits on the same hi hat - open, closed, rims, top etc would be cool, as would different hits on the same ride or crash.

I'm sure these could all be shaped in sw, but maybe not as good as the real thing?

what you need is BFD it is a program where each snare is sampled at a different velocity and many different hits are available to making snare rolls. i have actually taken many of the bfd snares toms etc and put them in sound fonts so i can load them up with out pc hogging my comp with BFD memory. one drum kit takes about a gb of memory to run if that tells you how many samples they do for one drum set.           http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)
