hi everybody, i've got a question but first i want to write a small tutorial

so everybody knows the popular breaks and eq / silence fun done in psytrance. for example vibe tribe does much such great stuff

(1) since i don't know a way to draw automation on the master out lane, i route every audio channel to a group
(2) on this group i can now set up insert effects, for example a filter or an eq
(3) in breaks i like to mute many audio channels and make digital silence for a 16th for example, before starting with some psycho acids
(4) another cool idea is to play with equalizer on this "master group" now, and automate eq settings to make some short passage of "radio effect" on the whole track and then some sweep and then new acid lines etc.
(5) be sure to try out this too: bounce some passage (a few bars or so) of the whole track and use the bounced material again on an audio lane to chop it and use eq automation or other effects to make cool sounding breaks where the whole song gets fancy with effects for a moment

i hope this short description triggers some ideas in you and you can use it for some good fun.

now comes the part where you please teach me: how can i route the effect lanes (send effect audio outs) to a group? they seem fixed routed to the master out channel (bus) where i can't draw automation on inserts. so my question is:
(1) can you route send effect outs to a group in sx 2? or
(2) can you draw insert effect automation on the master channel (which would render my technique with a group for everything useless)?

thanks alot and all the best!

in the 'out' pulldown menu of the send effect lanes (in inspector or mixer) there is only 'stereo out' and the groups i made don't show up there, dunno why, it's sx 2.2.0.33

@ WAVELOGIX:
i checked again, it seems that you can route the fx channels out to any _output_ bus but not to generated group busses created in the arrangement window (that's what i need, to make automation on the sum of all send fx outs at the same time, not for each individually). it seems that this is a measure of protection because of:

send fx out -> group bus -> route back GROUP to send fx -> you've got a signal loop.

hehe...

i prefer to export diferent groups of tracks (for eg one with the kick and bass, other with snares and hi hats, etc) to audio tracks and then do the automatation for the modulation of the track in an audio track.

this way you don´t have to mess with the originals tracks

FluoSamsara (Oxygen), yes this is also a good idea! also if you want to polish the bounced tracks before final mixdown, compress and eq etc. thanks for the input!

It is impossible to route FX channels back to group channels in Cubase. It is also impossible to route group channels back to earlier group channels on the mixer. One of the reasons for this may be to prevent people from setting up feedback loops which could crash Cubase and/or create some very nasty feedback.

Anyhow, apparently the best thing to do is to give up on FX channels altogether and just use group channels instead. They are effectively identical except that you can re-route group channel outputs.

Also it is best not to use any effects on the master channel (apart from mastering type stuff like compression, EQ etc.) If you do put effects on the master channel, for example a filter, then decide that you want a single sound unfiltered then it would not be possible.

I tend to set up routing something like this:

Kick+bass -> group1
Synths -> group2
Percussion -> group3
sound effects-> group4
etc.

I use groups 5,6,7,8... for send effects

then send all of these groups through final group which acts as a kind of pre-master channel containing everything.

Another tip is to leave one or two spare empty groups between each group that you use. This will allow you to change your mind later on about exact group routing - a work-around for the Cubase group routing restrictions.

@ tryptic: so here it comes! thanks for your ideas mate.

yes, feedback loops would be possible, i noticed it too (see my earlier post). your idea to give up fx channels and use group channels is the solution to the question! yeah, i don't use anything fancy on the master out. that's why i wanted the "pre-master" group in the first place.

your solution is beautiful, i appreciate your help.

all the best to you
