the "little" things the make big improvemnt of your over all quality for 2009 is:
Spend lots of hours in the studio perfecting the mix arrange & composing. consider removing some of the original parts, channels, layers to make more clear sound.

for psydust:
cutting & eqing every note of the bass is kinda hard work and usually u dont really know how much to cut.
I prefer using compressor with the eq for more stability.
B. Quality of element does metter! everything matter!

putting brick wall will only make you feel like you are peak managing instead of really treating the clips & peaks.

what i meant to say is that overall mix is more important than choice of instrumentation, of course! its all important!

with regards to slight brick wall compression on the master output while recording, its not a new thing, it has its pros and cons, just like everything in this world.

i found that when using carefully, by the time the mix is done and i am taking it off, most of the time there are no peaks and unwanted artefacts.

Starting a track with just a pad playing (say for 4 bars) and ending the track with the same pad (again, say the last 4 bars are just the pad playing) seems to give tracks a better overall feeling of completing a story.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Play around with effects and filters on leads alot - I'm kinda bored of all those leads that just have a sweeping filter on them.. automate the filter more! Make it crazier.

Also make longer and different melodies with each sound, like hihats and snares, for example. Add more ambience, which gradually changes, not repeating the same shiz for the whole lenght of the track.           Triplag Music
