So I just picked up my monitors at Guitar Center right before they closed. I didn't have much time to investigate them, the guy who sold them to me didn't even help me pick them up so it was some random dude. I bought a used pair from GC because it was like $100 off. Everybody said they should be in fine shape.

I haven't set them up yet but I just took them out of the box. The white part, which is the same white part as on the NS-10s, I'm not sure the technical term is... the sub part, is cracked. Will that affect the sound? Seems to me like it definitely would. They're pretty banged up too but that's just looks I guess. The site said I have a 30 day return but when I asked the woman there she said it should be on my receipt but we didn't see it on there. I tried to print the listing before I went in case something happened and I needed to return them but they took the listing down so I have no proof of a 30 day guarantee. Guess I'm just hyper vigilant about it cause I'm not trying to lose all that money I just spent only to throw these away or whatever but hopefully they won't fuck me if I need to return them.

So, I say unto thee, oh wise isratrancees, should I keep them or try something else? This monitor hunt is becoming so hellish, I've been trying to snag a pair for well over a month and it's not easy for some reason lol.

Well I called GC customer service and the guy on the phone recommended I return them and he assured me I have 30 days. So I guess that's good at least. Still disappointing but such is the world, eh?

Bring them back and get a new pair for the same price

If they are giving you a tough job just keep your ground and don't leave the shop until you get what you want: a new pair of speakers.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

Thanks guys. Yeah I'm gonna try my best to exchange them. If not, probably just return them and wait or something. Maybe it wasn't meant to be quite yet. And now I finally see that even THESE monitors are big for my room. Without rearranging a bunch of shit it's gonna be a real pain in the ass to put them anywhere so I'm considering just investing in the other piece of gear I need, an audio interface, perhaps Apogee Duet, for now and maybe getting monitors when I move back to a bigger place. Mixing in headphones does suck though, so uncomfortable.

The Yamaha MSP5's will be cheaper, smaller and flatter in frequency response than the HS range, just sayin', and as the range was discontinued last year some places are still blowing them out cheap.

As I said earlier in this thread, I was an extremely happy owner for about 11 years...           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

Yeah, I actually may just do this at this point. I could get a decent audio interface with it and not spend nearly as much. May I ask if you needed any extra reference to handle your bass, or did you find that they were fine for that?

I appreciate your advice!

No worries!

They were fine for bass. They have dual front ports. They sounded great. I think you can learn any speaker if you have it in the same position for long enough. I never found myself wanting a sub. If I needed to check on another system I'd use headphones.

Not sure if it's possible, but always best to try monitors out in your own room if possible.

A friend just bought a pair of MSP7s on my recommendation, although they are about twice the size and twice the price. He's very happy with them. He added a sub as well, am sure that sounds amazing!

thanks Babaluma but i am seeing these MSP5s still for the same price they were when released..
and they are almost twice as expensive as KRK Rp5's.

does anyone like the rp5s? better off saving a bit more cash?

what appeals to me about krk is that they ONLY make monitors. and although yamaha make some of the most famous monitors they also want to be the best engine, microwave, toaster and everything else manufacturer....

Which means they have the infrastructure and resources to devote a ridiculous amount of expertise in developing new products across the board...

Maybe they sound twice as good?

The MSP range were the last products developed by Akira Nakamura, the engineer behind the NS10s, before his retirement a few years ago, and according to him the MSP7s were the best and flattest speakers he was capable of making. Somewhat of a vanity project, if you will, but he was allowed the full weight of Yamaha's R&D department for all the great work he had done in the past.

But at the end of the day, the best way to make a monitor choice is set your budget, and then try a few IN YOUR OWN ROOM. Can't stress how important this is! Don't just buy on internet/magazine/sales person recommendations.

+1 usually yamaha product seems good for their price in their audio line..
a friend have the msp5 imo these are nice but sound a bit small and lack low end for my taste (for the monitors size it s normal don't expect big full sound )

Well I just ordered a pair of the MSP5's off ebay. I will get them in about a week. Thanks for the recommendation Babaluma, I'll let you know how it goes!

that's great! they are nice and small, but pack a real punch and can go very loud. spend some time with finding the best placement, and play loads of your favourite tracks through them to get a good idea of their "sound", and start learning/working with them!

am thinking of picking up another pair for myself as TV speakers for the lounge.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

Nice, glad to hear it. They definitely seem like they're worth it, I paid less than half for what I paid for the hs80's and it sounds like a lot of people are still very happy with them. Plus they'll actually fit in my room!
