Hey guys,
I'm looking to get a set of studio monitors for my little apartment here in NYC so I figured a smaller pair would be in order rather than a bigger pair. Anybody recommend I do the opposite? Or perhaps have a different opinion I haven't considered? Also, the two types I feel I've narrowed it down to are the Yamaha HS50m's and the JBL LSR2325P's. They are about the same price which is pretty much my price range for now, like 300-400 USD. I know monitors are a bit of a personal thing so I'm going to test these at GC before buying but I'm just looking for some more opinions now. I'm sure I'll eventually get some bigger ones like 8 inchers when I get a more permanent studio space that is bigger but for now I want something I can make solid mixes on for psytrance and chillout. Any recommendations? Even if it's different than what I've been considering I'd love to hear it! Thanks everybody!
Much love,
Ampersand. |

Thanks Kolishin! I was thinking the HS50s were the way to go until my teacher recommended the JBLs but I've read a lot of great stuff about the accuracy of the 50s. Good to see another fan haha. Thanks for the input, it is much appreciated! |

your welcome
Also dunno when exactly- BUT they are coming out with the Adam F-series soon! which will be a less costly alternative for good monitors as well. since they will have everything the past models have had. except new woofer material and a smaller amp built in prices will be 30-40% less!

Great advice everyone! I would be quite interested in checking out those new Adam's, do you know when they are due to be released by any chance? I was initially going to wait a bit to see if I could get some more money together for something a bit nicer but lately my regular use speakers have short circuited or something and they spike in volume randomly so it's made my hunt a little more immediate. If they're coming soonish though, perhaps I will wait. I'm all about making a good investment the first time. In fact, I normally would skip this set of monitors and get something much nicer off the bat to save the money in the long run but I'm afraid anything bigger with nicer bass response is going to be terrible for my room situation. Anyway, thanks again everybody, your input is very appreciated! |

i advice to get a pair of vintage speakers man. it will cost you nothing in states but will tear up any modern monitors up to $2000-3000. u wont need an upgrade too.

Hey Makus, thanks for the advice! First I've heard about using vintage monitors but I'm open for all ideas! I do love a lot of vintage gear so why not monitors as well? Anyway, I'm not familiar with any "vintage" models, how far back are we talking? Any models you might recommend? Or eras? Like if I look at the JBL stuff, which I've been considering and hearing a lot of good stuff about, what model(s) would be considered "vintage" JBL? I like this idea and I'd love to check out some of the vintage stuff, especially if I can get more quality for less cash, that's a huge plus in my book. Any light you could shed on it for me would be very helpful. Thanks for sharing man! |

Well I use JBL 4311b and they sound astonishing. Completely blow way any monitors cheaper than $2000 I've heard before. I amp them with Quad 405-2. I free lance in different studios and can compare my stuff here and there... Well, I would trade them for Dynaudio Air 20, but the pair costs $8000.
3-way, 12 inch bass, JBLs cost me $375 (+ $400 delivery to Ukraine, due to they are 42 kg). $600 more for amp. I can't imagine the same sound coming from any of modern monitors in the same price range. It is just impossible. In Studio B I just got Rogers LS5 (pretty rare model) which I now power with Electrocompaniet amp. These pair was used in the BBC studio since late 70s for a decade and also there is a chance that the pair was utilized during mixing of Pink Floyd's albums as nearfields
Anyways there is a whole world of those type of monitors. Manufacturers today sell a lot of new stuff made in China that is built mostly for home studios. But back in the day there was no home studios, everything was built for professional use, with no compromises in sound. If you dig into the theme, I promise, you gonna be rewarded
