The review:
No review yet posted for this one, so I decided to put some words into it. Second album of Slug, this time called 'Elemental'. Slug is, in my book, together with artists like Shift, Twisted System, Multistate and Xatrik at the top of the line for this kind of psytrance. Let's move through this track by track.
Track 1: We start off with some nice sampling, a great little bassline (which gets some more keynote changing later on in the track) and an overall good atmosphere to begin the cd with.
I like the way the track ends, building to a climax. A nice track for sure.
Track 2: Introductions are swept aside and with track 2 we're firmly back in the south-african style of things. A remix of Second Day apparently, but I've never heard the original so I can't compare. We start off with some atmospherics, bassline and bassdrum follow not soon after and snare, hi-hats come in later. The song picks up and we're off. Nice sweeping sounds and a kind of stutter effect on top of it all. A break at 1:57 with some sampling and atmospherics again. The song goes up and eventually builds to a climax once again. A great track and I'm liking the melody in this one.
Track 3: Starts off on a more light bouncy note. This is nice for diversity and it shows that Slug has had some experience with his first album already. Nice atmosphere in this one, a lot lighter than the previous tracks. Some nice sampling goes around in the track and the melody in this is good once more. Around the 5 minute mark this one explodes and then it's psychedelic all the way. A great track again, and so far this release is really doing well in my book.
Track 4: Starts off with atmospherics again and then a sample from Harold & Kumar comes in (loved that movie by the way, real funny) and we're off again. Swirling metallic kinda noises, reminding me of good old Oforia tracks. This song is partymusic all the way, never really letting up and continually keeping you up there. Good stuff.
Track 5: Starts off immediately with a great little acidic loop, percussion comes in and we're off with a bassline and kick. It's uplifting stuff again with a lighter edge than most south-african psy. But hey, this is just why Slug's music is that bit different from let's say Multistate. Ok, nice stuff, nothing much to say about it.
Track 6: Back in somewhat darker territory again. Lots of keychanges on the bass later on, uplifting sounds, pretty busy overall. A good track, and this is certainly a track that will work wonders on the dancefloors.
Track 7: An uplifting track once again, there seems to be no stopping Mr. Slug, hehehe Near 4:38 the track totally builds up and loses itself soon after that. A great track once again.
Track 8: How High, and most of you will know this one. It was also featured on the 'Edge' compilation by Nexus Media I believe. Anyway, a good track once again, gets stormier near the end and sounds a lot like Shift sometimes does. Good for parties.
Track 9: Kinda more in the background than previous tracks, but this is certainly no chillout. Is this related to Absolum's track?
Anyway, great stuff with a pretty wild finale and ofcourse there are some racecar samples in this track
Conclusion time then. Well, for an album of this style, this one serves up some real good quality tracks. If you like previous tracks of Slug on compilations or if you just love this kind of style in general, you should get this. It's great for parties and for home listening. 8,5/10 here. Solid stuff.
