Atma: You make a fair point, but we are talking about music sales, not performing, which is basically the only source of income. I know its nitpicking, since its obvious to people that make music, that their only source of income, is performing their music live (and making a live set that differentiates enough from the album versions of your music, so its worth listening to).
Thankfully people can't illegally download you and your live set...yet anyway

I agree with you, but what peoples don't understand is that selling of the music is strictly connected with all the other things i have mentioned above.

Shit music, shit live performance, shit sound quality, shit mastering, shit or ugly cover designs, bad or lack of promotion will result in bad sales. Label will loose money, artist won't get paid and he will loose interest to make quality music in the future or to make psy music anymore.

I was one of the lucky artist that I still got in 2009 the album sold out and this way i was payed full price by the label. But for this i had to do a lot a promotion myself, not just wait for the label to do everything.
And by promotion i am not thinking on commercial or agressive promotion, but smart promotion, without big investment but with big impact. The idea is to promote your music not only to the peoples in the psy scene by to peoples on the other scenes.
The hippy's on the psy scene don't buy music...they don't have money because they are to lazy to do something or simply don't wanna change their mentality or way of life. That's the reality !           NEW ALBUM OUT SOON !!!

Erm, mate, that is extremely cheesy and commercial music, that an awful lot of (Dutch lol) people want to go and rave their faces off, consume drugs and then go back to iTunes store and download the new Lady Gaga and Beyonce hit.
Although I have my views on the subject and will keep them to my self and without sounding elitist, the "deepness" of the psy-trance (that is actually psychedelic), is not as marketable as happy piano chords with a boom boom boom at 150+ BPM.
That place looks like good fun, but the only thing that I'd like to include in a psy-trance party, is the Function 1 rig.
Its obvious these parties are well organized cause from the looks of it, they are making shit loads of money....and they have MC's!!!! Ruining the drum 'n' bass scene is enough!

@ Disco Hooligans: well if you go on psy parties lately in countries like: Germany, Swiss, Austria just to give some examples you will see that 50 % of the peoples are the same kids who listen "Lady gaga" or german hip hop at home.

The only difference today is the huge sound systems, big lasers, good organized parties, etc, etc that we don't have..

And i forgot, we still have the police who come in the middle of the psy partyes and stop them or they force you to take down the volume in the night..

Agreed, but still psy-trance does not have happy piano riffs and them cheesy as hell melodies and MCs, hence it is not as marketable. Its not your bog standard rave where you go, you take so many drugs, and it does not matter what music is coming out of the P.A. you chew your own face off and have a great time...

I disagree, the main difference is the music that attracts the numbers required to have a big enough budget for huge sound systems, big lasers, hiring enough people to organize the party well...

...and probably hiring a couple of lawyers, or busses to drive the people to that far away place were the police won't bother coming round asking you to take the level down at night.

I don't know how other countries are, but the US manages to have the occasional 3000 person party where no one is chewing their face off, and we actually have good music

I don't care if you dislike minimal techno but you can't say that it's any more commercial than psytrancec is.

@Basilisk: maybe you missunderstand me. I wasn't talking only about sales in the psy scene but about professionalism in general.

Right, and I agree with you about professionalism and hard work, but the point was about downloading and recorded music. Your album is just promotion for what really earns you money: your performances. It is traditional to charge people to access this promotion... which--to me and a few other people--seems a bit backwards. That is just another perspective. Aside from that I'm with you 100%; hard work and professionalism are key!

i despise fakeness more than anything.

do you think we should market psy-trance as being cool to help sales?

if you think a career through music will get u a sports car you are mistaken...u will need an alternative..you will have to do a whole lot of ass kissing before you get that..and yes you will need an agent of an agent who has three more agents with five different lawyers and that sports car you will be driving will be outdated the very next minute you roll out of the showroom by some bigger son of gun who might be just paving the road with tar using his caterpillar and wham ! I think what people like Atma do deserves a lot of respect. Moving away from your family like he did is tough, but he definitely makes great music and has motivation.

People on this forum (read: not people in the scene) always jump on people when they say they want to make money from this. There is absolutely no problem with that! The ones who go for money for the wrong reasons are the ones who make that idea look terrible and arrogant. We should encourage artists and labels to be able to earn a reasonable living from just making and distributing music WITHIN OUR SCENE. Why does everyone seem so surprised that ppl like IM, Skazi, etc turn to producing cheesy music to make money- well they didn't make enough with the music they had been making so they had to switch.

Sure with the state of the scene now this isn't feasible for most artists/labels, but the idea of making money in this scene seems to have been getting pushed out for some time, so it's really no surprise the situation is what it is right now.          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Yeah but people came to that party not because Carl Cox was playing, but because it was Opulent Massive. There were 3000 people at that party and I don't know if there are even 3000 people who know who carl cox is and like him in the san francisco area.
